a) in 1972 the NHL had a team in the Atlanta market called the Flames. they left for Calgary in 1980. b) in 1997 Atlanta was awarded an NHL franchise. they were called the Thrashers. they left in 2011 for Winnipeg. This will be the third foray for Atlanta. Ick. I despise it.
