Xenofeminism understands that the viability of emancipatory abolitionist projects–the abolition of class, gender, and race–hinges on a profound reworking of the universal. Poetry, sex, technology and pain are incandescent with this tension we have traced. But give up on the task of revision, release the reins and slacken that tension, and these filaments instantly dim.

Earthworms are a resilient group of species thriving in varied habitats through feeding on decaying organic matter, and are therefore predicted to survive an abrupt sunlight reduction scenario, e.g., a nuclear winter. In this study, the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of foraging earthworms to reduce global famine in such a scenario with or without global catastrophic infrastructure loss was considered. Previously reported earthworm extraction methods (digging and sorting, vermifuge application, worm grunting, and electroshocking) were analysed, along with scalability, climaterelated barriers to foraging, and pre-consumption processing requirements. Estimations of the global wild earthworm resource suggest it could provide three years of the protein needs of the current world human population, at a median cost of USD 353·kg−1 dry carbohydrate equivalent or a mean cost of USD 1200 (90% confidence interval: 32–8500)·kg−1 dry carbohydrate equivalent. At this price, foraging would cost a median of USD 185 to meet one person’s daily caloric requirement, or USD 32 if targeted to high-earthworm-biomass and low-labour-cost regions; both are more expensive than most existing resilient food solutions. Crucially, such refinement only occurred when partners were allowed to interact graphically (even if this only involved placing a tick next to the drawing to indicate comprehension). In a control condition in which the participants simply repeated their drawings for an imaginary audience the drawings became more complex with repetition and retained their iconic character. A second finding was that with extended interaction communicators’ drawings became increasingly similar, or convergent (See blocks 5 and 6, Figure 6). Thus, in this task symbolic graphical communication systems evolved through a process of interactive grounding. Specifically, Garrod et al. (2007) argued that icons rapidly evolve into symbols via interaction; icons help ground shared sign systems and interaction promotes a shift in the locus of information from the sign to the users’ memory of the sign’s usage. This shift in information facilitates the evolution of increasingly simple abstract signs that are easy for communicators to produce and interpret. We should note that this interactive evolution from complex iconic graphical signs to simpler symbolic graphical signs parallels findings from experimental pragmatic studies of referential communication. In a tangram description task Brennan and Clark (1996) found that interlocutors often developed idiosyncratic short-hand descriptions for the tangram figures (e.g., ice-skater to refer to one of the shapes). They argued that these idiosyncratic descriptions reflected conceptual pacts established between the communicators through an interactive grounding process similar to that assumed above. Of course, although conceptual pacts lead to descriptions that are simpler than their precursors, as happens in the evolution of graphical signs, such descriptions are no more symbolic than their precursors. There is still some controversy as to the exact mechanisms responsible for this process in linguistic communication (see Garrod and Pickering, 2007) but …

Some simulations assume an evolutionary principle analogous to iterated learning in which the language is transmitted vertically down generations of speakers (Kirby, 2002). Others attribute evolution to processes of social coordination within communities of communicators (Steels, 2003). This contrast is also reflected in ES. For example, the iterated learning studies by Kirby et al. (2008) and Cornish (2010), discussed in Section “Emergence of Compositionality,” investigate the vertical transmission of artificial languages from generation to generation. By contrast, a number of studies in ES investigate the evolution of communication systems through interactions within the same generation of communicators (e.g., Galantucci, 2005; de Ruiter et al., 2007; Healey et al., 2007; Selten and Warglien, 2007; Scott-Phillips et al., 2009). How is this reflected in the results from the two kinds of experiment? First, as we discussed above, both arrangements, vertical transmission, and horizontal, can lead to the emergence of compositional communication systems. But do both arrangements lead to the emergence of simplified symbolic signs as illustrated in the study by Garrod et al. (2007)? To date it seems that only when there is horizontal transmission (and interaction) is there systematic simplification of the signs. Garrod et al. The recent surge of multiscale modeling related to solid mechanics, which has now grown into an international multidisciplinary activity and broached almost every industry, was originated from an unlikely source. As the US Department of Energy (DOE) national labs started to reduce underground nuclear tests in the mid 1980s, with the last one in 1992, the idea of a simulation-based design and analysis concepts were emerged, and multiscale modeling became a key in garnering more precise and accurate predictive tool. In essence, the number of large scale systems level tests that were previously used to validate a design was reduced to nothing, thereby, warranting the increase in simulation results of the complex systems for design verification and validation purposes. Essentially, the idea of filling the space of system level “tests” was then proposed to be filled by simulation results. After the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty of 1996, in which many countries pledged to discontinue all systems level nuclear testing, programs such as the Advanced Strategic Computing Initiative (ASCI) were developed within the Department of Energy (DOE) and managed by the national labs within the US. Within ASCI, the basic recognized premise was to provide more accurate and precise simulation- based design and analysis tools. Because of the requirements for greater complexity in the simulations, parallel computing and multiscale modeling became the major challenges which needed to be addressed. With this perspective, the idea of experiments shifted from the large scale complex tests to multiscale experiments that provided material models with validation at different length scales. If the simulations were physically based and less empirical, a predictive capability could be realized. As such, various multiscale modeling methodologies were independently being created at the DOE national labs: Los Alamos National Lab (LANL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Sandia National Labo…

Once this management infrastructure and associated funding were in place at various DOE institutions, different academic research projects were started, initiating various satellite networks of multiscale modeling research. This technological transfer also started in other labs within the Department of Defense and industrial research communities. The growth of multiscale modeling in the industrial sector was primarily due to f inancial motivations. From the DOE national labs’ perspective, the shift from large scale systems experiments mentality occurred because of the 1996 Nuclear Ban Treaty. Once the industry realized that the notions of multiscale modeling and simulation-based design were invariant to the type of product, and that effective multiscale simulations could in fact lead to design optimization, a paradigm shift began to occur in various measures within different industries as cost savings and accuracy in product warranty estimates were rationalized. For designing an automobile, airplane, building, or any structural system for that matter, large scale systems tests were (and are) expensive, and cost models showed that a physicsbased design can give a great return on investment. The advantages include the following: 1. Multiscale modeling can reduce the product development time by alleviating costly trial and error iterations. 2. Multiscale modeling can reduce product costs through innovations in material, product, and process designs. 3. Multiscale modeling can reduce the number of costly large systems scale experiments. 4. Multiscale modeling can increase product quality and performance by providing more accurate predictions of response to design loads. 5. Multiscale modeling can help develop new materials. 6. Multiscale modeling can help medical practice in making diagnostic and prognostic evaluations related to the human body. Hence, the market drivers for such an explosion of multiscale modeling into various industrial sectors are being realized.
