Title: Up the bridle path and back

I started going on walks recently.
Not out of need, though I’m compelled to roam,

often over bridges that lead
to where every shade of green gathers.

I collect stones
that rattle in my shoes.

Each step
I hope

will lead me closer to an epiphany,
whatever that is.

Five kilometers and I’m still not there,
wherever there is.

Secrets lurk in the muddy depths of the canal — I’m sure.
If only I could glimpse beyond its shimmering surface.

They say it’s insanity
to do the same thing

over and over
and expect something different.

Weeks ago, I’d call it desperation
to tread the same path

over and over
and expect

one day
familiar foliage

will reveal ancient wisdom
that hides amongst its leaves,

stashed away in abundance
like squirrels’ hibernation feasts.

Now I’ve ventured far enough,
it’s that and more:

curiosity, awe, yearning
to feel like a part of something.

Truth told I count caterpillars
that crawl along as I amble.

I stop to study them and I wonder
if they’re just bugs I happen to see,

or if, in their numbers, they’re supposed to symbolise me.
Maybe that’s the point —

that I’m just a bug crawling along and that’s okay.
If that’s not it, what’s another five kilometres, anyway?

Title: I wanna go to the World's Fair

Most nights I am lulled to sleep
by murders and mysteries.
Selfish, I know, to use tragedy as bedtime stories,
fuel to my fantasies,
to be so fascinated
by the art of going.

I should drift off to fairytales.
The ones without the slicing off of heels, fit for sweet dreams.
Girls becoming princesses, rewarded for purity with
heterosexual happily ever afters.
But, it seems like masochism when
it could never be mine.

In knowing what will never come to pass,
the metamorphosis of girl to me,
man and woman in wedded bliss for eternity,
all I can hope for is to vanish,
wish upon a star to leave no trace, leave with grace,
without a word, without a fuss, without demands.

Maybe I’ll walk into the woods.
No one will hear the leaves crunch beneath my boots.
With my final steps, I’ll evanesce.
It will be effortless, like closing my eyes.
But, the jackdaws and squirrels will scatter,
same as they would at the swing of an axe.

Those left behind will be none the wiser to what happened or why,
and the lingering questions will be the moral of the fable.
That, and it never had to be this way, until it did, until they made it so.
I hope they’ll learn. I doubt they will.
They won’t find where my bones are buried. I hid them myself.
Not really there to begin with is how they liked me best.

i rewatched dead poets society last night and damn i'm happy to be alive

I mean, even ignoring anderperry for a second, those boys read poetry to one another in a cave and their favourite teacher was their english teacher."

A Letterboxd review of Dead Poets Society (from me!). The movie is rated five stars. The review reads: "I've been finding it hard to focus on movies recently (maybe because I haven't been feeling great) but of course DPS grabbed my attention. every time I rewatch dead poets society it makes me want to not only stay alive but live. I needed that tonight more than ever. I want to read and watch and write and make and walk and breathe."
