The first time I got to a screen like this, I felt very accomplished. Good job, kid me. (I was probably ten.)

The game treats a collision at 5 miles per hour as 100 mph - instant game over. I first had to figure out how to not crash; and for that success, the game then told me, "You drive too slow." That's when I realized it was about speed.

I tried to drive following the rules of the road, but the game didn’t want you to do that. It wanted you to go as fast as you could. I didn’t know it was a racing game. I thought it was a car simulator!

It was before mouse gaming was a thing, so control options were keyboard or joystick only.

I eventually played it in EGA.

My first racing game I spent any time trying to figure out was _Test Drive_ by Accolade (1987) (CGA) for DOS.
