Somehow the story never seems to get around to the costs of climate change. The CCI did a series of reports on exactly this, and if there is anything that’s not sustainable in the long term and will have a negative impact on affordability, it’s climate change. climateinstitute.ca/reports/the-...

Ontario's restrictive new FOI laws mean request on potential hospital cuts denied www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Hospitals' plans for how they were going to get to balance were due last year and The Canadian Press filed a request in November for documents related to that in the minister's office.

The Ministry of Health gave themselves a 90-day extension to turn over the records, until March 10, but that date came and went with no further word from its freedom-of-information office. Several requests for updates went unanswered.

In the meantime, a bill to put the records of the premier, cabinet ministers and their staff outside of the reach of freedom-of-information requests became law, preventing future requests and also nullifying many requests actively being processed as the law is retroactive to 1988.

Um, Stats Can’s regular release of inflation statistics is not breaking news

I think that’s right, but it’s confusing the way it’s explained. It was the same with the initial announcement of 15% cuts. They gave increasing annual targets over three years and people were adding them up because it wasn’t clear.

Canada is the 4th largest oil producing country & we keep producing more & more This line needs to be going down or there is no future for our kids & grandkids Climate change is a threat > Trump. In an election abt transforming our economy, climate should be at the center of every policy proposal.

Trump also doesn’t care for USAID’s pro-democracy activities. Tim Weiner, author of Legacy of Ashes: The History of the CIA and a forthcoming sequel, The Mission: The CIA in the 21st Century, thinks that Trump and Musk want to destroy USAID “because it promotes democracy in nations like Hungary”—a source of huge annoyance to Viktor Orbán, one of Trump’s favorite foreign leaders and Hungary’s autocratic prime minister.

“Lest we forget,” Weiner noted in an email to me on Monday, Vladimir “Putin’s war with America started when he expelled USAID from Russia in 2012, saying its support for civil society was part of a State Department/CIA plot to overthrow him. (It wasn’t.)”

Which leads to the classified documents. There is a long-standing history of ties between USAID and the CIA. During the Cold War, they worked together in training police forces all across the world, notably in Latin America, where the exercises allegedly included techniques of torture. USAID also served as cover for various covert activities, especially during the Vietnam War. After the Cold War, according to Weiner, the agency funded democracy-building programs in the former Soviet Union, “sometimes on its own, sometimes in concert with the CIA.” As recently as 10 years ago, it used its pro-democracy rubric to help foment anti-regime propaganda in Cuba.

Throughout this period, as was the case with U.S. embassies generally, USAID was used as a front for CIA officers, though, Weiner says, “much less frequently now than in the old days.”

To the extent these activities persist, they would be documented in those rooms of highly classified materials.

There are other reasons USAID would store classified documents. As Peter Kornbluh, a Washington-based foreign-policy analyst who has done extensive research in this area, emailed me Monday: “Some of its aid programs require confidential agreements with other countries. They have identities of people supporting these programs in violent places where they could be targeted or killed.”

I may be a little early this year, but very pleased with how my seed set up is doing. They’re sprouting +/- 7 days in and it took them 3 weeks or more last year! Most are the same seeds! Happy little plant babies 🥰

Was looking at different poodle mixes, thinking (not very seriously) of getting a dog. The cocker spaniel-poodle mix is called a cock-a-poo, and I can’t stop thinking what a shame it was to pass right on by cock-a-doodle. My new imaginary dog is Roo (as in rooster) the cock-a-doodle.
