Completed Lego minerals set. There are three wood style stands with two minerals each on them: pale and dark blue fluorite, orange elongate tangerine quartz crystals, an amethyst geode, red cubic crystals of rhodochrosite, golden pyrite cubes, and a watermelon tourmaline prism.

Nature's creations/beauties of nature. Developed over millions of years, these stunning minerals emerge from Earth's depths. Shaped by heat, pressure and time, they connect us with nature through their artful expressions.

Watermelon tourmaline grows in pegmatite pockets where minerals like lithium or manganese help form its unique pink-green colours in elongated crystals.

Pyrite forms in hydrothermal veins and sedimentary rocks, often in cubic or granular shapes. Pyrite is also known as 'fool's gold' due to its metallic look.

Amethyst develops inside volcanic geodes, creating vibrant, purple-hued quartz crystals. The world's largest amethyst stands 3.27m (10.49ft) high and weighs 2.5 metric tons (2.75 US tons)!

Rhodochrosite forms in hydrothermal veins in manganese-rich deposits, often creating banded or rhombohedral crystals in pink/red shades.

Tangerine quartz gets its distinctive colour from iron-rich mineral coatings, forming as clusters or single points with a translucent, slightly rough surface.

Fluorite typically forms in an isometric cubic structure but it's not unusual to see it in octahedral and other intricate isometric shapes.

One of these days I'll make some more mineral pride flags. Here's one I made a few years back (check the alt text for specimen details)

Six photo slices of minerals arranged into a rainbow collage and below that, the six photos of the mineral specimens used for the collage. The crocoite consists of red, elongate crystals, from Tasmania, Australia. The wulfenite is tabular, interlocking orange crystals, from Arizona, USA. The sulphur is a mass of yellow crystals, from Sicily, Italy. The malachite contains curved banding in varying shades of green, from Russia. The azurite is a dark metallic blue resting on top of green malachite, from Arizona, USA. The amethyst consists of a mass of purple, translucent crystals, from Lake Superior, Canada.

All specimens are on display in the Natural History Museum, London.

It's #WerewolfWednesday and it's also 20 years since the Doctor Who episode Tooth and Claw first aired (22nd April 2006). I can't believe it's been so long, I was absolutely obsessed with that episode and even made a scrapbook about it 🐺

A very, very, very large 3kg bag of Swizzels Love Hearts sweets. The bag is transparent so you can see all of the individual rolls of Love Hearts sweets inside. There's a credit card sized NatSCA scale bar resting on it, so the bag is about 24cm wide and 36cm long.

Last night was the first time I've ever done an after hours event at the NHM (teenagers got to learn about a wide range of museum careers). I made a mineral matching game and the only person who managed to get all 12 right was a Minecraft player. Love that!
