Godzilla: King of the Monsters While the general opinion has recently started to come around in its favor, KotM was overwhelmingly hated on its release mostly for the crimes of A) not being made in Japan, and B) having the gall be a kaiju film that mostly wants to be a visual spectacle.
I know that any transforming G1 Megatron that's trying to be accurate to the cartoon is going to be an uphill battle design wise, regardless of what it's transforming into, but this one managed hit every branch of the poor design tree on its way down.
Not to diminish how great Huntress is, but she's not the only (potentially) trans plant person featured in Fionna and Cake's second season.
It's also worth considering not just how Bionicle was refined over the years, but what it was already a refinement of. Lego's previous contraction lines of Slizers/ThrowBots and RoboRiders were far more crude and function focused. Owing even more to their origins as a spin-off of Lego's Technic line
But later sets like the Barraki and the Toa Mahri sported very different builds from each other that gave each one a distinct silhouette and personality.
This is even more noticeable with many of the more affordable villain sets like the Bohrak who's near identical parts and builds earned them the derisive nickname "clone-sets" among fans.
And Bionicle has faced this exact same problem from the opposite direction. There have been many attempts to try to represent the designs of Bionicle in animation with debatable attempts at success.
The point I'm trying to make isn't that any of these toys are bad, it's that there always has and always will be a push and pull between screen accuracy/aesthetics vs. engineering reality. Every figure of Optimus Prime ever made has had to deal with this reality for better and for worse.
Fair enough, here's the first major attempt to create a figure that replicates the Sunbow design while still allowing it to transform into a truck.
I'll use the same example that Nick does to make my point. Optimus Prime is indeed an impeccable design. Instantly iconic and just as amazing today as it was when it was first featured on TV in 1984. But the original Optimus Prime didn't look like this...
For any given action figure line based off of any given piece of media, this doesn't mean all that much. Just take the design as it exists, and make a toy out of it with as few sacrifices as physical materials and the budget allows.
Ah, an excuse to ramble about my hyper-fixation while also lamenting about a truly frustrating waste of potential.
I fell vindicated for waiting on this now that the new Takara Lio Convoy has been announced.
Real Steel. All of the trailers made it look like a Bayformers style mess but somehow even more insipid. While the actual movie isn’t a masterpiece, it’s got a lot more charm and heart than its marketing made it look like it did.
