A quick life update....

For the past several months, I’ve been planting the seeds for what I hope to do when I take early retirement from UNCA in a couple of years. After nearly 20 years in Admissions, and about 13 of those focused specifically on campus visits and events, I’ve become pretty passionate about the idea that a campus visit isn’t just a tour. It’s one of the most important enrollment experiences a college can create.
I’ve been talking with several higher ed consulting firms about working as an independent contractor, helping their clients evaluate and improve their campus visit programs. Last week, one of those firms called to tell me that Eastern Kentucky University was interested in having its campus tours audited. Yesterday, I got the word that EKU accepted the proposal.
So… I officially have my first campus visit consulting client! 🎉
The project will involve evaluating the campus tour experience from the prospective student’s perspective, from registration and the pre-visit communication to arrival, the tour itself, the student ambassador experience, storytelling, and follow-up. Basically, I get to be professionally nosy about someone else’s campus visit program.
My plan is to do this work alongside my current role as Campus Visit Manager at UNCA over the next two years. During that time, I’m hoping to build experience, work with more institutions, refine what I’m calling The Visit Experience Model, and learn exactly what it takes to turn campus visits into a meaningful enrollment strategy.
Then, when I finally hang up my UNCA campus tour hat, the hope is to take what I’ve built and launch my own consulting firm focused specifically on campus visits and events.
It’s still very much a “let’s see where this goes” kind of thing, but getting that first client is a pretty big milestone.
Two years from now, I may be retired… or I may have accidentally created myself another full-time job.
Either way, I’m excited to see where this goes. Fingers crossed!
