Sundays too my father got up early and put his clothes on in the blueblack cold,
then with cracked hands that ached from labor in the weekday weather made banked fires blaze. No one ever thanked him.

I'd wake and hear the cold splintering, breaking. When the rooms were warm, he'd call,
and slowly I would rise and dress, fearing the chronic angers of that house,

Depression isn't just pain it's also perception. Inside it you feel it will last forever. That's what makes it lethal.

Mental health stigma = thinking an illness is really an emotion. Anxiety is not ‘nervous’ any more than starvation is ‘hungry’.

I can't think of anything that brings me closer to tears than when my old dog—completely exhausted after a hard day in the field—limps away from her nice spot in front of the fire and comes over to where I'm sitting and puts her head in my lap, a paw over my knee, and closes her eyes, and goes back to sleep.
