Rural Arkansas is worth fighting for. If I look like I'm listening, I'm probably daydreaming about light quality. I write about books and I prefer to hang out with dogs and chickens.
Today I finally got one. Well, two, because Shane does want to be able to go with me sometimes. Got them safely back to the farm from Little Rock with no incidents! If I wasn’t getting sick I’d be out there on the water in the dark right now 😅
For *years* I have been wanting a kayak of my own to putter around in our 6-acre pond, to fish or take photos or just be. The aluminum John boats I grew up with are just too heavy to manage alone, especially since I broke my arm, but not being able to go by myself defeats the purpose some days.
Our rural school literally has “second breakfast” built in to the high school schedule and I find it both hilarious and extremely wonderful for the kids.
I was today years old when I discovered that an opal can look completely clear under the right circumstances. I thought the stone fell out of my new ring from @peculiarityshop.bsky.social for a second! 😱 Love this magical little thing.
I may have been #ALAleftbehind this year but with a friend like @readonthebeach.bsky.social I’m never forgotten or left out. Thank you to @simplyrain.bsky.social for the shipping assist! I only cried a little bit about the last @yalsa.bsky.social banner 😭
Yesterday I got stuck in my own home airport for 12 hours, minus one 1-hour break, because of storms in Chicago and cancelled flights. Ended up on the only flight out, on standby. Lots of tears, but the good parts: library vibes helped me figure it out, window seat in the extra space row *alone*
My great-uncle’s state fair prize-winning lilies are here! It was a cold, damp spring and I wasn’t sure anything would bloom. So happy to see them. That first orange one is a new color and not anywhere near the flowerbeds where they’re “supposed” to be.
Bought myself this little cicada friend the night my mom died. Both the urn with her remains (delayed by several days for unknown reasons) and this ring arrived today. Highly coincidental. Not even remotely surprising. Thank you @peculiarityshop.bsky.social for the perfection.
I’m pretty sure Suzy recommended this in The Librarians and that’s where I heard of it. But I learned a lot and it made me feel both sad and hopeful.
Seriously gonna have to take days off work to put away food this summer. Green beans are starting to produce now and look at this corn! 🥰
Mom went on to whatever comes next around 1pm yesterday. It was as peaceful and perfect a moment as anyone could wish for, and my sadness is equaled only by my relief that she’s no longer suffering. See you on the dark side of the moon, Momma.
My two favorite constantly-repeated beliefs of hers: What matters most is how well you walk through the fire. And What goes around comes around. She’s the kind of mother *everyone* deserves and too few people have. I could not have been luckier than to belong to her.
Reallllllllly do not know who my brother thinks is helping him harvest and preserve this garden because my sister in law and I only have the 4 hands between us and there are only so many hours in a day. There are like 20 different types of plants. 42 tomato plants! An ACRE-LONG ROW OF POTATOES.
Good bit of rain, but not enough to overflow the creek and make it to our pond yet. Soon, I hope. Also, the bug was there first and the butterfly was a bully about it.
Rural librarianship is being gifted a tray of 18 Bradley heirloom tomato plants from a community member whose family has passed these seeds down for generations.
I have this same setup. Different toolbox, but I bet it’s the same brand. It’s back there under a pile of things that did actually get put away since this was taken 😂😵💫 I *love* this thing. It has sockets and a light and the drawers close so smooooooothly. Excellent makerspace for my little library!
Walked into a wall of smell in the yard yesterday. Second best smell in the world, topped only by my giant gardenia bush.
In 15 minutes, I’ll officially be 40. Saw Charles Wesley Godwin tonight, and forgot my ID in the car so I had Xs on my hands. 😆 Fantastic show. Was my first time at The Hall, too. Definitely will go back; it’s a great size.
Spiderwort makes me happy. Whole farm’s covered in it right now. I got the “real” camera out today, even. Will upload and edit those later. Plus Biscuit the rooster feeling photogenic and some dew drops on a spiderweb that were *so* sparkly.
Hey @peculiarityshop.bsky.social it arrived and it’s everything I wanted it to be and it fits like it was made for me. Thanks immensely.
