Text Shot: The best depictions of AI tend to be about AI becoming self-aware, and therefore bypassing our comprehension. Pantheon, as I mentioned, is quite good at that. While I think it’s a bad movie, Transcendence gets the weirdness of AI right I think. Other really good AI portrayals can be found in Vernor Vinge’s Rainbows End, where the AIs are mostly expert assistants embedded everywhere and they help people research, translate, and organise information. Another accurate AI is the Illustrated Primer in The Diamond Age. This is an electronic book that teaches through conversation, adapts to the learner, answers questions, invents stories on demand, and walks through reasoning rather than simply giving answers. There’s an actor involved, but the AI feels very prescient.

In the end, maybe we just haven’t had time to think about AI creatively in ways that are not only accurate, but that also do not fall under some of the most annoying tropes described above. We just need more…

Text Shot: As I'll discuss further below, I've begun to explore whether these touted changes make a difference in the real world (such as it is) of law professoring. For example, I've combined various "plugins" available to the new ChatGPT to grab information from strong legal databases on facial versus as-applied constitutional challenges in constitutional law. I've used ChatGPT's new @sites feature to build a website on the subject that my students (or anyone else) can use. The results from that and other work are good enough to confirm my sense that lawyers and legal educators need to once again put ChatGPT on roughly the same level as Claude for getting work done. Those of you who held out for a year or so waiting to adopt Claude, consider your inertia to have been rewarded.

AI Summaries Are Not Killing Reading. They Reveal What Reading Already Is ai-in-society.blogspot.com/2026/07/ai-sum… #AI #reading

The proper question is therefore not whether a summary counts as reading. The question is what kind of reading a task requires.
Sometimes we need orientation. Sometimes we need a central claim. Sometimes we need to check whether a document deserves closer attention. An eight-week study of college students found that some students used Al summaries to decide which parts of assigned texts merited deeper reading. This practice can become passive, but it can also support triage in a world where no scholar can read every relevant source from beginning to end.
We should teach students to move between levels of compression. They can begin with an Al overview, inspect the original text, compare the two, identify what was lost, and revise the summary. That process makes summarization visible. It turns a hidden mental act into an object of judgment.
The educational task is not to protect every page from compression. It is to teach students when compression is the work, and when the missing page

I think it is already the case in software engineering, and will increasingly be the case in many professions, that we can think of knowledge workers as similar to a crane operator or a forklift operator.
The machine greatly amplifies the human potential to do physical work
— it's doing all the heavy lifting, but the person still remains in control.
And I think this is what is happening with cognitive work. Machines are going to increasingly do the cognitive heavy lifting, but the person still remains in control.
The entire job gets reconceptualized as being about operating the machine, understanding the machine, and controlling the machine, as opposed to doing the cognitive work ourselves.

Yes I said "reality rolled over" on purpose. The logic of "preemptive regulation" or "presumptive
negatives" is what incumbents use to slow technology adoption. They do so using the language of fear or appeals to morality to just slow down and consider... The problem is you really can't consider a technology that is already out there. You can't put it back in a bottle. You can't make people stop using something they like out of concern without making a case that the mere worries negatives provably exceed the realities of the benefits.
The ability to express concern does not replace the need to demonstrate harm. Preemptive regulation is the enemy of progress.

So here's the ask: write the next Al use policy as if someone whose learning or lawyering process looks different than the institutional ideal will have to live under it, because they will. According to Bloomberg Law's 2023 Law School Preparedness
Survey, one in four law students identifies as neurodivergent. Then, keep writing policies that way, because the keeping is the part that matters and the part always quickly forgotten. Do that, and maybe the next tech disruption arrives and our students don't have to spend time watching someone else decide if its use is antithetical
to the indispensable core of lawyering.
Maybe they just get to learn.

Our goal in this essay is to move beyond the debate over whether Al is a bubble.
We do so in two ways: clearly
separating current financials from the question of who captures value in the long run, and recognizing that the labs are not confined to be model providers.
They can migrate up the stack and are already aggressively doing so. This will likely allow them to escape the commodity trap but raises new concerns — customer lock-in and reduced competition.

Illiberalism shows up in plenty of other areas of life. It's the human default. I worry that when people lurch away from a full numerate picture of the world, it's less that they don't understand the numbers and more that their minds are already made up: there are specific bad guys to destroy, and statistics are only useful as weapons against them. Anyone giving other people ways of comparing and contrasting the full situation is suspicious, they're providing avenues to be okay with the bad thing. On the environment at least, our ethics should let people with radically different beliefs and tastes live together. Enough people get real value from Al products that the decorative statistics critics hurl at them look to me like unjustified attempts to override a difference in taste among reasonable people. We owe each other the full numerate picture of what's actually happening in the world, mainly because we shouldn't deceive people into adopting our own contentious value systems. Going

Now run those two paragraphs through a bust. Every district leader who spent the last three years in wait-and-see mode will feel vindicated, because the headlines will say the skeptics were right all along. State education budgets will crater the way they did after 2008 — ask anyone who got a pink slip in the spring of 2009 — and Al readiness will become the easiest line item to cut. The students who graduate into that economy inherit the worst of both: fewer entry-level on-ramps, and employers who treat Al fluency as a floor. Whither websites?
Whether websites survive the AI era at all is another big question we're all grappling with.
What I gleaned from Sanchez at
AIEWF was that the traditional website is unlikely to disappear completely, but its role will surely change.
Rather than being a fixed collection of pages that every visitor navigates, a
"website" could become a governed content and interaction system that assembles an appropriate interface on demand. At least, that's the future that Adobe is actively exploring.
