Digital health should not become another space in which people living with long-term conditions are made to feel like they have failed. When an app is abandoned, the problem is not automatically a lack of motivation. The design may have asked too much, offered too little, or failed to fit the realities of living with fluctuating
symptoms, work, caring responsibilities and
everyday life.”

“What we’ve found are “signals” in routinely collected school records that help us identify when pupils might need support. If we treat school performance as a measure of not just academic ability, but also as an indicator of pupils’ wider circumstances, we could find windows of opportunity to notice early when pupils are struggling and offer them appropriate support.”

“Typically what we see is a variable response [to psilocybin therapy] … people are often introduced to some painful emotional material that they have been trying to put to one side but actually that is what is causing the depression… So we are stirring up the mind via this drug [psilocybin] and its effect on the serotonin system…and we hope that in the right context we are introducing a therapeutic window of opportunity for people to make progress.”

A large-scale GWAS led by King’s IoPPN and collaborators has identified the largest number of genetic associations with #anxiety to date. The study linked genetic data to severity of symptoms rather than the yes/no category of a clinical diagnosis. ➡️ www.maudsleybrc.nihr.ac.uk/news/novel-g...

“Given the high and rising rates of anxiety, especially in young adults, it is more important than ever to improve our ability to identify and understand sources of risk.

We hope our findings encourage a new wave of large-scale analyses to accelerate our progress in understanding the genetic architecture of anxiety.”

“Our findings suggest that biological ageing data can help identify individuals at risk of dementia before clinical symptoms emerge. By combining genetic factors with potentially modifiable factors captured in biological ageing, we may be able to develop preventative strategies, potentially based on a simple blood test.”

“Dementia affects almost a million people in the UK. Finding ways to detect and treat it earlier will help not only those affected but the families, friends and medical staff who support them. By combining genetics and information on biological ageing, this work from the NIHR Maudsley BRC team could help us do exactly that - spot dementia sooner and delay it or even stop it in its tracks. For 20 years, the NIHR has focused on empowering experts to tackle the biggest challenges in health and care, ensuring that breakthroughs like these continue to reach the people who need them most.”

World Maternal Mental Health Day: New research

The researchers found:

Around 1 in 5 perinatal women had loneliness recorded in routine clinical notes
Recorded loneliness was associated with greater and longer mental health service use, including more face‑to‑face contact and days in receipt of mental health care
Loneliness was also linked to higher risk of crisis episodes, inpatient admissions, and changes in family support structures under the Mental Health Act.

These findings suggest loneliness is far more than a background social factor, it may be a meaningful clinical marker of risk, and show the need for support and sustained engagement with services during a particularly vulnerable period.

The 12 months after childbirth offers a crucial opportunity to identify and address psychosocial needs.

Recognising loneliness earlier could help tailor care, strengthen support, and reduce longer‑term service burden, benefiting both mothers and infants.

AI scribes are a hot topic in the NHS, with use in mental health services rapidly rising. They combine speech technology and LLMs to auto-transcribe and summarise clinical consultations. Integrating the technology has many implications that must be considered if they are to be used responsibly.

“Mania is what defines bipolar disorder, yet it has remained surprisingly difficult to study in its own right. Our research on the genetics of mania gives us a clearer picture of its biology and how it differs from other psychiatric conditions. In the longer term, this could help clinicians recognise bipolar disorder earlier, reduce the long delays many patients face before receiving a diagnosis, and improve outcomes through more targeted treatment.”

“Our study shows how important it is to design an appropriate placebo condition in clinical trials of brain therapies. There is a large placebo effect with high-tech brain therapies, in particular for patients and families that have an expectation that they can adjust brain differences associated with ADHD.”
