architects like Tadao Ando and Kengo Kuma designed public toilets in Tokyo. this book I have on all the different ones was a great gift someone brought me from a trip there. a lot of thought went into them!

makin baked beans for tomorrow

chop and sauté a pound of bacon until half-cooked. add a chopped onion and garlic and cook until onions are translucent.

Add a cup of ketchup, cup of dark brown sugar, half a cup of bourbon. 1/4 t oregano

add 12oz pineapple, preferably crushed but any will do.

add 80oz basic baked beans. not the kind that have brown sugar. that's what we're making but better. let it all sit overnight in the fridge and we'll cook it tomorrow at 300 for 90 minutes

ever since I was a kid i've wanted to have an office in this eccentric old building on sunset, the cross roads of the world. well fam, I made my dream come true.

the view out the window of my office shows a ship-themed building from 1936, a tower with a globe with neon and palm trees. It's vintage kitsch and pure Hollywood. It was apparently the first mall in America and failed immediately because Sunset never has and never will have pedestrian traffic. Hitchcock kept an office here along with lots of other interesting people.

"Cartoonist John Holmstrom and writer Legs McNeil
(b. James Ambrose McNeil) created Punk magazine, coining the term "punk" for the new music coming out of New York. Their first issue featured Lou Reed (b. Lewis Allan Reed whose former band, the Velvet Underground, served as an inspiration for many punks.
Reed's parents were both children of Jewish immigrants.
His father changed the family name from Rabinowitz to Reed. The family observed Jewish traditions and Reed had a bar mitzvah. As an adult Reed was not religious, however Jewish themes and ideas appear throughout his music. Despite his deeper connection to his Jewish identity later in life, Reed could be glib when asked about it. His friend Rabbi Levi Weiman-Kelman reflected that
"the Jewish tradition presents clear boundaries. Lou liked to blur boundaries."

"The Ramones formed in Queens in 1974, taking their band name and stage names from a Paul McCartney alias. Joey (b. Jeffery Ross Hyman) and Tommy (b. Tamás Erdélyi) were Jewish, Dee Dee (b. Douglas Colvin) and Johnny Ramone (b. John Cummings) were not.
Joey Ramone rarely spoke about his Jewish background.
Tommy kept his Jewish identity so quiet that the band's manager, Danny Fields (b. Feinberg), didn't know until much later. Tommy reportedly said he wasn't hiding it, just that "no one had ever asked." His parents survived the Holocaust hidden by neighbors during the German occupation of Hungary.

The first song, "Blitzkrieg Bop," named for the Nazis
"lightning war" campaign, was originally called "Animal Hop." Dee Dee, changed the lyrics. Tommy recalled,
"He wanted to do the Nazi thing, so that it would never get played on the radio. But now it's a TV commercial.

"Today Your Love, Tomorrow the World" was originally titled "I'm a Nazi Baby." Seymour Stein of Sire Records was appalled. "I'm Jewish," he told them. Tommy, the son of Holocaust survivors, rewrote the song.
Tommy later said, "There's a cathartic effect when you take your deepest fears, your deepest anger, your deepest hurt and try to make something out of it, something transformed."
For Johnny Ramone, the use of Nazi imagery was more than shock value or trauma. He directed antisemitic slurs at Tommy and Joey, collected Nazi objects, and reportedly hung a portrait of Hitler in his home."

"Singer and visual artist Jayne County moved to New York from Georgia in 1968. She was part of the Stonewall Inn Rebellion in 1969, where patrons of a popular gay bar fought back during an NYPD raid sparking several days of protests and demonstrations marked by police violence.
By the mid-1970s she was a fixture at Max's Kansas City and CBGB, where she DJed. In 1977, she moved to London and later released the EP Blatantly Offensive.
A pioneering transgender performer of proto-punk, she influenced David Bowie, Lou Reed, and Patti Smith."

yeah it's true. for some reason it doesn't bother me (yet). perhaps bc the buildings are such an improvement i'm grateful for that alone. went on a hard hat tour of the new holocaust museum. they expect visitors to go from tens of thousands to 500k. almost all school kids!
