Their America: Driving a large SUV 20 minutes to the chain grocery store to buy second-rate jarred salsa and sad chips for “couples game night.” My America: Riding a Dutch bike 2 blocks to a Mexican market to get three different fresh salsas, chips, and guacamole to feed my gay-ass tabletop group.
If anyone is wondering whether @mcbl.bike is still endorsed by the opossum community in south Minneapolis, the answer is: yes. This friendo, who I have named Ossum O’Possum, met me at the door to our garage tonight as I came back from mplsqueerbook.club.
Minneapolis isn’t perfect, but I’m very thankful for its relative affordability compared to many other “bikeable” cities, and that our infrastructure—despite gaps—makes running errands, eating dinner, and grabbing groceries with my kids viable by bike. No better bang for your buck in North America.
“What’d you do for the 4th?” Oh, you know. @lauragmitchell.com and I went on a bike ride, met our friends’ cute dog, saw some other friends at the park, got Pho in St Paul, went for ice cream in NE Minneapolis, and then took a surprise shower on Hennepin Ave.
How often, when driving a car, do you run across a friend, and then slow down and chat for a bit? It happens kind of a lot when you use bikes for transportation.
Sorry, still stuck on this. I’ve always thought “born this way” was a shit argument, and I can’t believe people still try it. Regardless of whether attraction and gender are innate and fixed, living a queer life *is* a choice—a choice prioritizing your wellbeing in the face of a hostile society. 1/4
Some people will say this REI ad was AI generated. I choose to believe that they have finally embraced the power of “reach around bars,” and acknowledged the bourgeois redundancy of having two pedals.
Update: ready to go in the ice cream maker. I feel very justified in my pandemic purchase of an expensive Cuisinart ice cream maker with built-in compressor. Going to run four batches back to back tonight.
Making two batches of strawberry ice cream and strawberry sorbet with 4 pounds of fresh strawberries. Mmm… maceration.
I have reached "My partner is sending me photos of Dutch-style bikes to identify" levels of Dutch bike obsession. If anyone is wondering, pretty sure it's a Public "C" series bike with the same paint job as the current C1.
My new water bottle arrived, and they threw in an extra item! I’m calling it a “wurse” (water purse)—they call it a “bottle sling” because they are allergic to good product names.
When your kids know you’re the tooth fairy but insist you still do it, and wear fairy wings while doing it.
I also paid $18 for what is quite possibly the worst Chicago dog (and soda) I’ve ever had. So, that really rounded the experience out nicely.
Today, my friends delivered a care package to our house—with flowers, sweet treats, packs of Pokemon cards for my kids, and a beautiful portrait of Marvin—and I started crying. Out of grief, absolutely. But also, the realization that the feeling of love and care was back stronger than ever. 4/4
The tree in question (or at least what will fit in a frame with the bark’s details clear):
Tree people of Bluesky, what the heck are these things? They fall off our neighbor’s tree each spring and end up all over our yard. Located in South Minneapolis.
Gonna edit Tom Petty’s Wikipedia to say he was pansexual and source it to the Full Moon Fever album cover.
Do I know anyone in the Twin Cities who is capable of soldering/repairing small wires? Or, does anyone know someone who is? I got a fun little Android handheld from China (Odin 2 Portal), their QA left something to be desired, and I haven't heard back from them. Happy to pay!
Periodic reminder that the Minneapolis venue that began its life being used by the Minnesota National Guard, eventually became the home of the Minneapolis Lakers, and which later became a parking garage, is not called "The Armory." It is clearly The EARMORYE. It's right there in the logo.
One of the only perks of having me as a friend/loved one is that sometimes I’ll make you ramen.
