One of the Heian Emperors was a big cat dad.

As early as the Heian period in Japan (794–1185), cats were highly valued and considered rare treasures, often exchanged among the upper class as luxury items akin to precious jewels. Ownership of cats was primarily restricted to the emperor and the nobility, with records indicating that some aristocrats even bestowed court ranks upon them. In 889 Emperor Uda documented in his diary Kanpyō Gyoki the gift of a kitten he had received. He described the cat's deep ink-colored fur and meticulously noted its behaviors, such as its tendency to curl into a circle when resting and its hunting practices. The emperor was so captivated by the kitten that he compared its cries to those of a black dragon, reflecting the deep affection and admiration he had for his pet. These writings provide insight into the esteem in which cats were held during this era.[2][3]

This cracks me up.

Pet culture in Japan has a long history going back centuries, especially in regards to cats. Pets were originally referred to as aigandōbutsu (愛玩動物 lit. "beloved toy-animal") or short-form aiganbutsu, but the terminology has changed in the 20th century into the anglicised petto (ペット).[1]

I think there’s good reason not to habitually mix religion and politics, but I can also say it felt deeply empowering to see faith leaders in my community speak so openly and forcefully against the injustice they see. They also offered free resources for combatting ICE.

Look, if there’s solid evidence Gaiman was smeared, let’s see it. But I feel like it‘s a bad look that the “quality journalist“ he cited in his defense appears to basically be a Gaiman fan blogger.

Excerpt from a statement by Neil Gaiman republished in Variety, the most relevant part being “I was a journalist once, and I have enormous respect for journalists, so I’ve been hugely heartened by the meticulous fact and evidence based investigative writing of one particular journalist, whom some of you recently brought to my attention, who writes under the name of TechnoPathology.”

Other efforts to denazify the public fell flat. Although notions of showing Germans the results of German atrocities by tours of camps loom large in Allied public memory, such as this scene in Band of Brothers, these efforts were not very successful. Allied reports on the reception of educational events in German PoW camps and other areas showed their audiences universally treated them with disdain. Likewise, the recipients of American public opinion surveys conducted within the AmZone registered a good deal of skepticism about Allied motivations and a wide-spread sense that the Allies were just rubbing Germans' noses in the misdeeds of a criminal few. Even the Allied tribunals of war criminals failed in their pedagogic function of informing and educating the German public. The famous German diarist Victor Klemperer, a German Jew who miraculously survived the war, felt the main Nuremberg tribunal went on too long:

Reingruber {a fellow professor} said, it was a mistake on the Allies' part, to spin out the Nuremberg trial for so long on the wireless. It made people numb and indifferent. That was also my opinion exactly.

Klemperer was no friend of the Nazis, but his indifference to the tribunals was telling. There were also notable clemency drives for convicted war criminals. A good many German clergymen such as Bishop Theophil Wurm were advocates for men like Joachim Peiper and argued that the trials were a form of victors' justice. Some of these appeals directed among Germans stressed that such retribution was due to the influence of emigre German Jews within the occupation.

Wow it’s even stupider than I thought. The reason SSBNs work as a deterrent is because they’re *hard to find*. A battleship is, conversely, an *extremely visible target *. Giving them nukes is just dick waving and does nothing to help their mission or nuclear deterrence.
