John Brown's Last Iowa Trip 1859
john Brown, with twelve men, women, and children escaping Stavery from Missour, plus his own men, stopped one-half mile south of Marengo at the farm of Draper B. Reynolds February 23-24, 1859. The Pennsylvania born Reynolds, now age forty-nine, had come to lowa in 185S.
Brown's winter ourney had besun two months carly when they rescued enslavnd persons at three farms it southwest Missour then radualy moved north throw Kansas and lebraska before enterine low on February 4th. After difficult days of cold and snow, their passage across lowa fortunately came during a mild winter period.
From here Brown's party traveled through lowa City to Springdale, a recent Quaker settlement in southwestern Cedar County. On March 10th they boarded a rail car at nearby West Liberty heading to Chicago and then on to Detroit where two days later they crossed by ferry to freedom in Windsor, Canada.
Ten months later Brown was dead. The former Kansas fihter had been captured and hung after he and his band (includin four lowans) on October 16, 1859 carried out a failed attack on the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry.
