"the last person I wanted to ever talk to as a CEO was the government" is one hell of a quote for someone who was the CEO of a State-majority owned enterprise. Who who want Luxon to ever be a CEO of a company - if his important guiding star value is to not give a damn about your major stakeholder/shareholder? And when that is the case, why are we still accepting him as a Prime Minister?

Green Party co-leader Marama Davidson has labelled the coalition government “a pack of bastards”.

And when challenged by The Hui presenter Julian Wilcox that her language was “harsh”, Davidson doubled down.

“It's not harsh enough, Julian. The real-life damage that they have been doing to people, women, disabled people, Māori, the trampling over Te Tiriti, the absolute desecration of our tāiao, our living systems. There's far stronger words. I'm being mild.”

Davidson said people were feeling that their communities had been “spat on”.

"Following the Greens' announcement, National ran a social media post attacking the plan.

"You'd probably think they're only talking about taxing billionaires, people with yachts, multi-millionaires. You'd be wrong," the voiceover said.

"Because if you ever want to earn $160,000, you would need to pay 45 percent of it to the Greens and Labour. It's right there in their document."

But the video failed to take into account New Zealand's progressive tax system.

For example, someone earning $75,000 a year is not taxed at a flat rate of 30 percent.

Their first $15,600 is taxed at 10.5 percent, their income between $15,601 and $53,500 is taxed at 17.5 percent, and then only the income between $53,501 and $75,000 is taxed at 30 percent.

Under the Greens' plan, people earning over $160,000 would pay 45 percent on that income above $160,000 - not 45 percent of their total income."

"The staffer who received a document from Fonterra and Z Energy - that made suggestions for a potential law change - was a senior adviser in the Prime Minister's Office.

The Prime Minister's chief policy adviser Matt Burgess received the briefing note, which had been delivered in hard copy in mid-2024.

Burgess was in the role in the Prime Minister's office (PMO) between January 2024 to October 2025, and had previously worked at the New Zealand Initiative think tank as senior economist.

It's understood he remained working in the Beehive for some months after that, but was no longer within the Prime Minister's office.

Who can get the Winter Energy Payment

You'll automatically get the Winter Energy Payment if you’re getting Jobseeker Support Student Hardship, or any of these benefits from Work and Income:

Jobseeker Support
Sole Parent Support
Supported Living Payment
Young Parent Payment
Youth Payment
Emergency Benefit
Emergency Maintenance Allowance.

If you're getting one of these benefits, you will automatically get Winter Energy Payment. You don't need to apply for it.
Who can't get the Winter Energy Payment

You can't get the payment if you're not getting Jobseeker Support Student Hardship or one of the above benefits from Work and Income.
