This summer, Europe has seen devastating wildfires. But there's another kind of fire we can't see. Marine heatwaves are causing mass die-offs of corals, sponges, and underwater forests every year, and the Mediterranean is one of the most affected regions.⤵️
Hake is under great pressure from overfishing and needs action to be protected and recovered. The Western Mediterranean already has a recovery plan in place through the #WestMedMAP. Its success won't depend on rewriting the rules, but on delivering the commitments already made.
The Mediterranean deep sea is home to incredible life we still know little about. We're calling on Mediterranean countries to extend the deep-sea trawl ban to below 800m to protect these critical ecosystems, biodiversity, and the future of Mediterranean fisheries. #DefendTheDeep

As the #EUOceanAct conference kicks off today under the Irish Presidency of the @consilium.europa.eu, Oceana sees the Act as a unique chance to turn ocean health ambitions into action – supporting thriving coastal communities and a sustainable blue economy.

The EU #MarineActionPlan is key to implementing environmental laws. It must be backed by compliance with the Habitats Directive and #CommonFisheriesPolicy to improve fisheries management in protected areas and support low-impact fishers through preferential access areas.
Oceana is in Cyprus at the high-level conference on islands & coastal communities, calling on EU leaders to use the #OceanAct to enable low-impact fishers preferential access to coastal waters. Small-scale fishers are key to keeping coastal communities and their economies alive.
