there are many other cool castles in Georgia, but those were my favorite to visit. also down the river from Khertvisi is the cave monastery of Vardzia. the original site was a Bronze-age cave city which became a monastery with defensive fortifications and even irrigation. some monks still live there
the Khertvisi fortress in Georgia sits atop the confluence of the Mtkvari and Paravani rivers and is pretty cool. very defensible position imho. honorable mention to Kvareli fortress, which now contains the pitch of local football club FC Duruji Kvareli. you can watch matches from the ramparts
