I'm the same! Once I start with the 3D phase, I convert the curves to a mesh almost right away. I'd say prepare the vector to be as close to the final shapes from within Illustrator. Isolate layers so they're whole/manifold. (example: the outline is filled and just goes behind the darker shape)

Quick lighting solution for more interesting results without distorting the silhouette of 'flat' shapes, logos, etc. Round out or add depth to the shape, then remove the depth by way of the camera. (by changing the lens type to orthographic, or heavily increasing the focal length and backing away)
