This was taken on a very cold, windy winter morning, maybe 45 minutes to an hour before sunrise. To my eyes, this moment was at the time nearly completely dark. I therefore had my camera mounted on my tripod, my lens wide open and my camera set at a slow shutter speed. But even using my tripod and having a fast lens wide open, I still could not quite capture this tree as sharply as I wanted. At the time I was more concerned with my hands being frozen, so it was only much later that I noticed that I’d caught the wind itself. If you look closely at the branches of this tree, you’ll see the blurriest ones are those furthest from the thickest branches. Sometimes Mother Nature demands that you capture her visual poetry correctly. 😉

An Imperfectly Perfect Burmese Sunset. When I saw the birds, I realized I had too narrow a lens on, but tried to capture everything anyway. Nothing quite centered, no Rule of Thirds, no Golden Ratio… Nothing like I wanted it. But somehow this image captures my memory of Shan Province, Myanmar well.

She asked to pose with my camera. I watched her admiring the image on the focusing screen, and then carefully inspect all sides of the camera. She then asked, “Where do the batteries go?” I found her question fascinating as I realized her bright but young mind could not imagine the image she was seeing was NOT produced electronically. It made me feel old, but it made me feel good about the mechanical marvels of previous generations… and about current and future electronic marvels I could not have imagined when I was her age. 😊

Leica is tough to beat in 35mm all the way around, I guess. They’re a true 35mm system company. Konica and Fuji glass maybe is just as good sometimes. A friend was trying to get me to get the SL2, but I just couldn’t justify its bulk and cost, particularly with all new lenses I’d have wanted.
