49. Fingersmith by Sarah Waters 3.5 I had no idea what to expect from this, other than it's a seminal queer work. It was good, but I enjoyed Waters' other novels a lot more though.

48. The Fisherman by John Langan 3.75 I was recced this by a friend. There's a lot I like about this book, especially that it explores the particular horror of drowned places. However, the book was more vibe/aesthetic than actual substance.

47. Slewfoot by Brom 4.0 This book made me so angry on behalf of the protagonist. Interesting little twist on early puritan witch hunting.

46. Night Film by Marisha Pessl 4.0 This was a reread and it definitely held up. Such an eerie story with a plausible explanation that you still end up questioning.

45. Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle 3.5 Quick horror read. I liked it, but not as much as others of his I've read.

43. Poor Things by Alasdair Gray 3.25 Parts of this are brilliant but other parts are so dry that I wanted to put it down. Interested to see how they managed to adapt this.

42. The Once and Future King (books 1-4) by T.H. White 3.0 I know this is an Arthurian classic. And maybe I just read too many stories growing up about Merlin and Arthur. But this bored the pants off of me in some places and overall, was oddly paced. The last book, especially, left me cold.

41. The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov 3.0 Man, oh, man. I really wanted to like this book. I've heard nothing but good things about it. But I wish I'd read it while in school. Gonna chalk it up to a case of bad timing.

Hugely disappointed in Ethika. Seems like they're using AI to generate their designs now. Their bold photobashing graphics - love em or hate em - have always been their style. But no human techniques explain this. 🤢

39. Titus Groan by Mervyn Peake 3.5 I didn't care for the story much but man, Peake's prose is... Well, peak.

38. Darkdawn by Jay Kristoff 3.75 I enjoyed this series, but for how brutal and unforgiving most of it was, the ending tone was a little saccharin, imho. Still worth reading.

37. Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff 4.5 Great second installment to this trilogy, but man, do I want to shake Mia.

36. Nevernight by Jay Kristoff 4 Decided to roll with my Kristoff binge because I enjoyed the previous trilogy so much. Very solid start to a promising series!

33. How To Survive Camping: The Man With No Shadow by Bonnie Quinn 3.0 It was fine. It just didn't click with me. Possibly the narrator. 🤷🏻‍♂️

31. The Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff 4.25 I really enjoyed this one. Great world building. Very cool twist on vampire mythology and Catholicism. Can't wait to read the sequels.

30. The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang 4.0 Very interesting fantasy setting. In desperate need of more non-western, pseudo historical stories like this. Still think I like Babel and Katabasis slightly more, but it's a close one.

29. The Summer I Ate the Rich by Maika and Maritza Moulite 3.75 Always a fan of new (old) takes on horror creatures.

28. The Hospital at the End of the World by Justin C. Key 3.5 Promising premise, but unfocused with lots of pacing issues. Not a bad novel, just rough. Fell flat for me.
