Today I saw sensitive plants growing wild. Around on the other side of the tree where it gets more light, they were flowering!

Found a tiny friend today

Calcinus seurati, Seurat's hermit crab, in the palm of my 12 year old daughter. It has a black shell and black legs, with bright white bands on them. It's quite small, you could probably fit two of them on her thumbnail.

The courtyard of the resort we're at on the big island. It's very swanky and the grounds are immaculate. The ocean is a two minute walk from our room.

Fun fact: when a Minnesotan goes on vacation, they're obligated to go to Target as quickly as possible. (the zipper on our suitcase broke when it slid down the little ramp on the baggage carousel, so we had to go buy a new one. Fun way to start a vacay, for sure.)

I'm flying to Hawaii and paid for the slightly better seats. For the first time in my adult life, my knees don't hit the seat in front of me! This is magical!

I love my daughter and will support her however I can, but she's becoming a theater kid and I'm just not sure about this kind of lifestyle.

I sometimes wish I could make room in my heart for another team. Any other team would do, tbqh. I mean, jesus christ, look at this performance tonight.

The pitching box score for the Colorado Rockies tonight. They lost to the Marlins 14-3. Four pitchers went to the mound for us, the lowest ERA of the group is 4.50. Our starter gave up 5 runs on 9 hits in five innings of work. Just terrible.

My wife is growing one of those crazy fractal broccolis.

$Big brassica leaves surrounding a head of romanesco broccoli. If you've never seen one of those, it's a little hard to describe, but wiki says that "The inflorescence (the bud) is self-similar in character, with the branched meristems making up a logarithmic spiral, giving a form approximating a natural fractal; each bud is composed of a series of smaller buds, all arranged in yet another logarithmic spiral. This self-similar pattern continues at smaller levels. The pattern is only an approximate fractal since the pattern eventually terminates when the feature size becomes sufficiently small. The number of spirals on the head of Romanesco broccoli is a Fibonacci number.[6]"$

Sometimes people put things in our Little Free Library that I take and just toss straight into the recycling bin.

The front cover of 1980's "Rapid Healing Foods" by Ben Davis. At the top of the cover, where you might expect a blurb to be from some other author, it instead reads (with this capitalization scheme) "All Rapid Healing Foods contain YOUTH RESTORATIVE X, says Ben Davis: They flush out poisons for quick relief of scores of ailments!". There's another quote at the bottom but it contains thirteen different ellipses and I'm not typing that all out. It's just more of the same woo gibberish.

When I was in middle school, my dad read Haroun And The Sea Of Stories out loud to us. Tonight I've started doing the same for my kids (12 and 10). It's just as perfect as I remember. I hope they like it. He wrote a legacy sequel 20 years later, that'll hopefully be next. I haven't read that one!

My wife grew some radishes that are somehow ready already!

A small metal bowl on a countertop. Inside the bowl are about a dozen radishes. They're not round like the ones you get from the store, they're kind of eggplant-shaped. Scale is hard to tell in the photo, but the bowl is about six inches across.

He's a good dog but there just isn't much going on upstairs for him.

I'm hanging out outside my kid's ukulele practice, check out this amazing little bug crawling around on the picnic table! This is a 6.5x zoom, he's maybe a millimeter long. But what a great color!

A tiny bug that's something very close to hunter orange on a plastic background with many little cracks in it.

The same bug as the other photo but here my phone has whitened the background some. He's very bright!

Junior Kimbrough is a member of the Blues Hall Of Fame and was arguably the greatest hill country bluesman of all time and I'm just not sure spotify is giving him the dignity he deserves with this cover photo.

The cover photo for his Spotify page. It's a candid snapshot of him walking along shirtless, taking a drag on a cigarette, in front of a somewhat rickety outbuilding of some sort. He's slightly bent forward and looks awkward. It's not a flattering photo by any stretch of the imagination.

I made a brisket! It turned out okay, not great, in large part because the flat side cooked way faster (duh) than the thick one. Next year I'm going to cut them apart so both can cook for the proper time.

About seven hours into the smoke (so 7am, more or less), here's what it looked like on the grill. It's a 13 pound hunk of meat on a grill with a temperature probe on both the left and right sides. It's a very pretty shade of orange-red.

Done! It's the meat from before on a red plastic cutting board. The meat is now something I can only describe as BBQ brown. Good stuff.

We had an adorable helper at the community garden today.

What I think is probably an American Toad, Anaxyrus americanus, in some straw. Like all toads, she looks vaguely grumpy but was honestly pretty good-natured. She appreciated getting watered along with the tomatoes that were planted today.
