Next they played 'Zero Percent', a B side from Danger Days WHICH THEY HAVE NEVER ONCE PLAYED LIVE? (Warning for flashing)
They started with "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" which was an obvious choice as it's one of their most famous outside of WTTBP album. It's about a shitty relationship (had to stop filming when people started a pit lmao)
Please enjoy my friend and I's commentary while Gerard starts "Welcome to the Black Parade" like a dictator or conductor. Completely forgot about this until making my MCR thread lmao
Not the fucking hairpin chair 😭 You cannot make this shit up. One thing the NR girlies love is a hairpin chair. God bless Cabaret 🎩💃🪑
Also, to add to this, in editing/colourgrading, all skin shows as a variation of orange so blue/orange is VERY popular because it creates contrast across the board. Contrasts pop better onscreen and considering blue contrasts well with every race(in film) it works! (Obviously I am simplifying here)
My friend is turning 27 and wanted a theme for her birthday She made the unfortunate mistake of googling 27 club and is... taking it well 😭
So, in summary, I don't *Really* know what compelled me to make this whole thing, but with their connections to Taylor and other NRs, their latest tour shenanigans and their individual (gay as hell) projects, they're definitely some leading contenders for new romantics I hope you enjoyed! 🍎🏹🕺🪩🎶🪜⛓️🌟🇦🇺
Ashton juggles a really interesting contrast of goofiness and solemnity which is so well done. He's had some difficult times through the years, but he advocates highly for mental health awareness, all while pushing a hopeful, heartwarming narrative that works well with other NRs 🩸🥁🌈💐🕺🏹
Sadly there is not much in the way of Gay Photos but he sure does give some fruity vibes All of the guys are very physically affectionate with each other and kind of always have been which, whether queer or not (or even dating) really speaks to a softer, non-toxic masculinity that I love
And don't you worry his visuals were also mental. He had MORE versions of himself, bloody drums, a ladder/staircase, a fucking ARCHER?
Additionally, he once again talks a lot about mental health. He's struggled with depression and alcoholism (he's been sober since 2020) and looks back on his own illness as well as people's in general.Driving = mental health His allusions to dark vs light feel even more agonising with this in mind
Continuing on, we have disco balls and bathrooms, little sparks of something, chasing the moon, written confessions and MORE LIGHT VS DARK MOTIFS Particularly him following them in the dark AND light suggests he's closeting FOR SOMEONE (Can I go where you gooooo)
A lot of the songs seem to allude to someone feeling trapped and desperately wanting to reveal their true selves. He doesn't think he's seeing heaven because he can't see the light. He's chained up and hanging between lips. Keeping the secret is killing him... Just saying, sounds super 🏳️🌈
His latest solo album, Blood on the Drums came out in July 2024 and once again it was full of motifs. Much less depressing at least
This album had a really interesting contrast to the lyrics because it's all very warm and hopeful We got the bouquet of flowers and the blurry picture, the THREE VERSIONS OF HIMSELF, the half drowning/submerged self, the bathroom mirror, zodiac mentions Contrasts a lot with Luke and Calum's stuff
And would you look at that: MORE DARK VS LIGHT MOTIFS And also time, burning buildings, broken crowns, pavements, playing the WRONG TEAM, dreams, basements, drowning, perfume, refusing to move on... You're telling me this is 4 straight men writing all this shit?
His style is a lot more rock than the others when he's solo, which makes sense being a drummer lol His lockdown seemed to go pretty poorly with the themes of self-improvement, screaming for the truth, eating disorders, secrets, failed love and self doubt. But also we have gold and eyes! Yay! 👀
Note: I actually got my dates wrong and Ashton was the first of the boys to come with a solo album and, like Luke, he has two now with his first coming during lockdown. His came out on October 23rd 2020.
Last but not least, a 🧵 on Ashton Irwin and his New Romantics flagging . . . . Also TW for discussions of mental health and eating disorders btw (nothing graphic)
Just remembered that Luke and Calum from 5SOS made a fuckign Heated Rivalry post with zero explanation or context... Which could mean nothing...
To be honest, I did not go into this thread thinking Calum was 100% gay but the blue and green repetition is kinda popping off Overall, he's anothe NR who seems to constantly struggle with "forbidden loves" which COULD mean nothing. He's certainly flagging some VERY interesting things🃏💐💚💙🪜🎂
We've also got a very Midnights coded bedroom set up, raining indoors, a pile of papers and tarot cards, a bouqet, more blue and green AND blue and pink, a birdseye view of him in the road, double lamps... Tbh all of their solo albums/eras have INSANE imagery and symbolism
Again, visually he has a lot of blue vibes which reminds me of Luke's albums/imagery. 💙👀 We got staircases and tilts, smashed cakes, blurry visuals, red flowers, blue and green blobs, mentikns of colourful spectrums. All very arty and consistent Extra note: the ship name for Luke and Calum is CAKE
Also much like all the other boys, he also uses the fucking lighting motifs Not to mention the heaven and the allusions to tarot cards and night vs. day, he's got a very conflicted relationship with himself and... someone else
He also has a song called Three of Swords which is, obviously, a tarot reference. It seems to allude at a relationship which started in childhood but is kinda doomed anyway As far as we know he's not been with someone since childhood so.... (I'm inclined to wonder if it's one of the 5SOS boys)
Calum's solo album is another of the more sad albums we've got, though not quite as devastating as Luke's. We got burning houses, street metaphors, driving motifs, dreams, cloyds indoors, impact of fame on relationships... Also the idea of loving "wrong" is very queer coded to me
He also came out with a solo album right before Michael did, Order Chaos Order which depicts him in a box filled with water Which could mean nothing...
