Bonus non-bird! Six-spotted tiger beetle with a confusing number of spots

An emerald green beetle with a reflective thorax and head. Its abdominal carapace has four small white spots per half, resulting in eight total spots, making one wonder why it’s called a six-spotted tiger beetle

Great blue heron in flight. Don’t see those rusty wrists very often (or at least I don’t) 🪶

Great blue heron in flight above a lake in front of green branches, its wings in a downbeat. Its primary flight feathers are slate gray, its secondaries are a much lighter gray, and its wrist joint is actually a rust color which you don’t get to see very often. Its head is coiled into its shoulders and its long legs trail behind its relatively short tail.

Best I could get from a bazillion yards away on a private industrial lake with no access to the other side. But whatever, it’s a loon and we don’t get a ton of them around here so I’m happy! 🪶

You can see just a bit of that titular yellow rump here 🪶

A yellow-rumped warbler perched atop a thorny Honey Locust branch looking off to the right. It’s perched with its tail just on the far side of the branch but you can still make out a touch of yellow on the overtail coverts AKA the rump, giving it its name. The bird is otherwise slate gray in the head and neck, speckled black across the chest and flanks fading to a white belly. There are subtle white wing barbered the dark primary, secondary and tertiary wing feathers.
