On April 16, for my senior seminar on German songwriting, I organized a night of songs with students where they sang, rapped and recited songs & poems, I played guitar & sang a bit, & a colleague sang the final song. The feedback I’ve gotten from students has been positive unlike anything I’ve seen.
Musical and literary amnesia: every one of these genres has medieval roots and was widespread in the early modern era, but there is a tendency in literary studies to credit their invention to Bürger and Goethe and leave it at that.
