A second, more concerning, finding is that younger Canadian adults are less emphatic in agreeing that democracy is the best form of government. While few of those in the youngest age group go as far turning toward authoritarianism, a larger proportion says it doesn’t really matter. /6
There are 3 key findings. 1) younger Canadians don’t stand out as being particularly dissatisfied with democracy, less trusting of political actors or institutions, or less supportive of the political system. But, in these cases, older Canadians (age 60 and older) are distinctive. /5
“the proportion of Conservative Party supporters who are very proud of being a Canadian is … at the lowest level recorded since tracking of this question began in 1985.” /3
There’s been a lot of commentary over the past few days on the topics of patriotism and support for democracy in Canada. I thought it would be worth posting a reminder of where to find the best survey data on both topics. Please follow along… /1
Lower-income Canadians are much less likely than higher-income Canadians to say that a university degree is worth the cost, even with a student loan. These findings are particularly relevant considering recent changes to OSAP. open.substack.com/pub/cdnsurve...

Great reflection from @maxfawcett.bsky.social on B.C.’s political culture, the differences between B.C. and Alberta, and whether “B.C. might have some grievances too.” Here’s my contribution. One of the most overlooked shifts in public opinion in Canada has been in B.C.
This make not me the simplest chart we’ve ever produced but it is worth taking a moment to look it over. It explains quite a lot. Thanks to @cbreton.bsky.social & @irpp.org. #CoT2026 policyoptions.irpp.org/2026/06/albe...
In 2019, provincial NDP supporters were only 15 points less likely than UCP supporters to say that Alberta was not treated with the respect it deserves. Today, that gap stands at an astonishing 66 points. ▶️ environicsinstitute.org/spotlight-on...

Is support for independence in Alberta growing? Not really. In fact, there appears to have been no increase in support over the past two decades. 25% supported independence in 2005 - the same proportion as today. #CoT2026 #CdnPolitics Find out more 👉 environicsinstitute.org/spotlight-on...
Since 2019, the proportion saying that Alberta is not treated with respect has fallen by 23 percentage points, from 71 to 48 percent. ▶️https://environicsinstitute.org/spotlight-on-alberta-2026/
I wonder how opinions in Alberta about the Canadian federation have actually been evolving? environicsinstitute.org/spotlight-on...

While a majority of Albertans and Saskatchewanians continue to say that the federal and provincial governments are not working well together, opinions are nonetheless much less negative than in 2024. ▶️ environicsinstitute.org/building-fas...
I found it striking that, on average, when asked about the federal government’s “building faster” agenda, Canadians are just as likely to insist on the need for buy-in from Indigenous communities, as they are to insist on provincial or territorial agreement. environicsinstitute.org/building-fas...

Despite the Conservative Party’s current focus on law and order, its supporters are more likely than supporters of the other federal parties to oppose the idea that national security should trump civil liberties. Read more 👉 open.substack.com/pub/cdnsurve... #cdnpolitics #cdnpoli
This overlap in strategies suddenly occurred to me while listening to the post-game interviews last night. Seems important.
But the gap in opinions between supporters of the two main political parties is much larger in the U.S. than it is in Canada. Details 👉 www.environicsinstitute.org/projects/pro...
