I feel the same, and am often reminded of the famous Toni Morrison quote about racism. So much time is wasted because of the need to monitor and combat malevolence.
My son is taking this class, so we’re in luck here. I expect the rest of you to start being nicer to him.
Each year our department holds a small ceremony where every graduate has a faculty volunteer to say something personal about them. Families come too. It’s a lot to organize, but people appreciate the more intimate atmosphere compared with the larger, official university ceremony.
A lovely spot for a graduation: green grass, sailboats in the harbor, and a peace symbol as a backdrop.
