Persistent gaps in the availability of data, institutional capacity and financial resources further contribute to differences. Gaps are particularly relevant for the assessment of compound and cascading risks, which remain less systematically addressed. These limitations, in turn affect how climate risks are identified
and integrated into policies. It contributes to uneven levels of risk awareness, preparedness and policy uptake across countries and sectors.

The average SST over the extra-polar ocean (60°S–60°N) for June 2026 was the highest on record for the month, at 20.86°C. This the first time in 2026 that the daily and monthly SSTs for 60°S–60°N have exceeded the corresponding levels of 2024 and reached record levels for the time of year.

“El Niño conditions are already underway and are forecast to strengthen rapidly into a strong event - as accurately anticipated by WMO forecasts. This will intensify the chances of drought and heavy rainfall and the risk of heatwaves on land and marine heatwaves in many regions of the world,” said WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo.

“The WMO community has launched an unprecedented mobilization to coordinate activities across the United Nations and at regional level to support governments, humanitarian organizations and climate-sensitive sectors. Advanced seasonal forecasts and early warnings are vital to save lives and cushion the impact on our economies and our communities,” she said.

W is built on the AT Protocol, an open-source framework for interoperable social media. This allows compatible applications and services to communicate across a shared network and gives users greater freedom to choose where and how they participate. Like other services built on the AT Protocol, W consists of several different components. Some are based on open-source software, some are developed specifically for W, and some are licensed from third-party technology providers. W itself is not currently a fully open-source application, and technology developed specifically for W will not automatically be published as open source. During W’s early development, the repositories we forked were publicly accessible and were later made private while we reviewed security, privacy, licensing, intellectual-property, documentation and commercial considerations. W will republish the forked repositories, with improvements, integrations, bug fixes and technical documentation when they have been properly reviewed and are ready for responsible release. W will comply fully with all applicable open-source licences. Our commitment is to support open standards, interoperability and meaningful user choice, contribute responsibly to the AT Protocol ecosystem, and continue building a secure, sustainable and distinctive service.
