Final day (6) of our walk & we made it to Wallsend! 86 miles from Bowness. A pleasant riverside walk along the Tyne into Newcastle, stopping for coffee & cake at an Italian café. Carried on past some reminders of coal haulage & many bridges & then left the riverside for the final 5 miles....
Day 5 of Hadrian's Wall trail - a long section which left the remnants of the wall behind, mainly spending time walking close to the Military Road through fields, besides the Vallum (a ditch behind the wall). Spotted a 4th trig point. Staying by the River Tyne before the final leg to Newcastle.
Day 4 of our Hadrian's Wall Path. A shorter, mostly downhill stretch from the Old Repeater Station to Cholloford. We passed a milecastle overgrown by oak trees, long stretches of Wall still there & an old temple & a visit to Chesters. Had time for a swim by the bridge. JimBobs ear healing OK now.
We're walking the Hadrian's Wall path and there are 3 trig points so far.....
Day 3 started in Gilsland, looking at an impressive milecastle. An amazing section of the walk, with long sections of intact wall plus impressive views. Lots of climbing on this section, but great route beside steep crags. Did about 10 miles of the Pennine Way as well, which joins the Hadrian's...
Leg 2 of Hadrian's Wall Path started with some dog drama outside the sandwich shop in Carlisle when JimBob (our dog) was bitten on the ear by another dog. We detoured to the vets before continuing on the walk. A few road sections then a climb up to the amazing sections between Banks & Gilsland.
Finished the first stage to Carlisle. Great weather. Lots of birdlife on the estuary & butterflies further along. A fairly flat stage. NB the FKT for the Hadrian's Wall path is 12hrs 31mins set in 2025!
Been asked to assist another runner on leg 4 (Wasdale to Honister) of their #BobGrahamRound attempt in August. That should be fun, as it is the best leg (most scenic & usually done in daylight!), but I'll have to brush up on my navigation. Good to be able to help another contender.
Today's run took me from Hawes to the top of Gt Shunner Fell & back on the Pennine Way. Beautiful views & weather.
Today we had better weather for our walk up Nethermost Pike, Dollywagon Pike & Seat Sandal. The last Wainwrights on leg 2 of the Bob that Lucy hasn't climbed. Got good views over Swirral and Striding Edge and Ullswater.
Yesterday's Wainwrights were Bowfell, Crinkle Crags and Cold Pike. (#126 for me). Weather was still blowy on the tops!
We had a spare weekend in the diary as a bad weather backup for my Bob Graham attempt. Obviously, we're in the Lakes ticking off some Wainwright's (a goal for both of us). Today, we walked up High Rigg (#125 for me) & then most of the Leg 2 summits (Clough Head, the Dodds, Raise & White Side).
We've been visited by a small family of Foxes over the last few weeks, a vixen and two cubs. I think this is one of the cubs.....! 🙂
I knew I would make it from there. The whole of leg 5 felt runnable apart from the first climb with my son & my sister. Made it to Keswick with 26mins to spare. To top it off, I bumped into Jasmin Paris today at the Keswick Mountain Festival!!
I made it to Wasdale just about on schedule & took a rest to change shoes & refuel. I maintained reasonable energy levels & enjoyed getting up Great Gable to a heavy metal soundtrack. From there it is about 4hrs to the finish. I knew now I could do it & felt elated. Got to Honister with 10 min spare
I've had an amazing weekend. Having attempted the Bob in 2023, I got as far as Gt Gable when the wheels came off. But I wanted to have another go, having learnt a lot of lessons from that. The weather was absolutely perfect. We had clear summits all the way round. No wind and not too warm either.
Tracker has arrived! 24 hrs to go until the #BobGrahamRound starts!
Hopefully this time next week I'll have finished leg 1 be on the way on leg 2. Only a 30% completion rate so far this year. But I'm feeling well trained and prepped!
Last long run done before the #BobGrahamRound attempt. Covered 53km & 4000m climbing in (just) under 12hrs which is approx target pace, over Welsh rock & grass. 320km total & 15,000m ascent for April. Will now be tapering off for a couple of weeks.
Had a great weekend running various bits of the ##BobGrahamRound route. Climbed Blencathra on Friday evening & tried the "parachute" descent off the summit. Then we ran legs 4&5 on Saturday & leg 2 on Sunday, bumping into others recceing the route & discussed route choices. Ran 78km & 6000m ascent.
My phone is throwing up photos of my recce trips to the Lakes 3 years ago..this one is on the summit of Sca Fell, with Wastwater just becoming visible thru the clouds. The weather had been misty up until then. I didn't end up completing the BG Round. Partly due to choosing to get from Scafell Pike
We had amazing 🌞 weather today for our walk up Blencathra via Souther Fell. Good views of Sharp Edge. Then, we walked to Mungrisdale Common, Bannerdale Crags & Bowscale Fell before dropping back down. 5 Wainwrights in all, #122, 123 & 124 for me. Nice craggy edge between Bannerdale Crags & Bowscale.
We walked up the tiniest Wainwright today, Castle Crag (290m high). Despite the small height, there are great views over Derwent Water towards Keswick & towards Honister. It was gifted to the nation after World War 1, (as were Gt Gable and Scafell Pike). Wainwright no. 121 for me.
I finished March with a loop from Keswick to Honister, then back on the 5th leg of the #BobGrahamRound. Not many views from the tops, but it was dry! Happy with my training in March, despite 2 weeks off with illness. Ran 240km & (more importantly) climbed 12,000m of ascent. 6 weeks to go!
We bagged two Wainwright's summits today - Walla Crag and Bleaberry Fell. Number 120 for me. Mixed weather with hail/rain/sunny spells and looks like there is still snow on the tops. Great views over Derwent Water and the Helvellyn range.
Been off running for 2 weeks due to a persistent virus. Started back with Keswick Parkrun. A beautiful route along a trail, over bridges and through tunnels. Scenic views of snow-draped flanks of Blencathra. Also bumped into an ex-resident Doctor who worked with me back in 2013.
We had a spectacular day in the Lake District. Snow on the tops. The hills looked amazing. We ran leg 1 (Skiddaw, Gt Calva & Blencathra) coming down Halls Fell, which was a bit snowy at the top but ok after that. I carried on to do most of leg 2 over the Dodds & Helvellyn but ducked out before...
I returned to Langdale Valley for another go at the 2nd half of leg 3 of the Bob Graham. The weather wasn't very promising at the start, cold, rain, hail & gusts of wind. However the forecast was for the wind to drop and when I got to Esk Pike it had & it stopped raining! Mickledore was OK so I...
First trip to the Lakes for a recce trip for leg 3. Leg 3 starts in Dunmail Raise near Grasmere & ends in Wasdale. It's the longest & toughest leg with 2000m of ascent. We had mixed weather with snow, rain & sun. We did about 2/3rds of the route today, plan to do the 2nd half tomorrow.
