Paul sent the referral, a formal request to consider criminal charges, after the contempt finding. But the Kentucky senator,
a longtime Fauci antagonist, bypassed a referral vote by the full Senate. He described a full Senate vote as unnecessary. Democrats said Paul was violating Senate rules by skipping the vote,
which would likely fail to achieve the necessary 60-vote majority, and called the move dangerous and unprecedented.

I find that I often have to read the last paragraphs of a NYTimes article to get to the important stuff.

A lengthy transcript in the files appears to show that Dr. Axel was
talking with Mr. Epstein not only about science, but also about Mr. Epstein's efforts to secure a pardon from Charlie Crist, who was then in his final weeks as Florida's governor. That transcript describes a conversation between Mr. Epstein and a man identified only as Richard, who is described as doing the same scientific
research into the olfactory system that Dr. Axel conducted.

The two make jokes about Mr. Epstein's status as a sex offender, with Mr. Epstein saying that some women tell him that they find his criminal designation "exciting" and Richard replying with an off-color story about a 20-year-old prostitute with a much older
man.

Criminality is so rampant inside CBP that it has seen one of its own agents or officers arrested every 24 to 36 hours since 2005. CBP's misconduct
scandal is so long-running that today it would be old enough to drink. In total, according to CBP's own discipline reports, over the 20 years from 2005 to 2024 — the last year numbers are available - at least 4,913 CBP officers and Border Patrol agents have been arrested themselves, some multiple times. (In 2018 alone, a single CBP employee was arrested five
times.) To put that number in perspective: • The population of CBP agents and officers who have been arrested would make it roughly the nation's fourth largest police department - equal to
the size of the entire Philadelphia police. • Indeed, for much of the 2010s and likely before and since, it appears the crime rate of CBP agents and offices was higher PER CAPITA than the crime
rate of undocumented immigrants in the United States.

“My lovely wife asked some 60 Minutes producers to report out a story a little more, literally Hey guys make a couple more phone calls and then we’ll run the piece in a week or two,” Ms. Bowles wrote. “No! the media collectively shrieked. This madness is related to the other major Trump innovation: his team of disruptors has discovered that in modern America, actions do not have to be legal in order to be effective. It only needs to move faster than the courts. An unlawful executive action can remain in force for months or years before a final ruling arrives. During that time, markets adjust, companies comply, executives adapt, and political objectives are often achieved by the time a court intervenes.

That means nonprofits and their employees could be punished for carrying out their mission simply because it doesn't align with the current administration's. All of this would be carried out not by courts or juries, but by partisan officials with unchecked authority.

Everyone has a stake in stopping this blatantly illegal, dangerous and anti-democratic rule, but for faith communities in particular, this is not an abstract concern: If the government can decide which nonprofits are legitimate and which are not, it can just as easily target churches, faith-based charities and religious institutions whose teachings or missions conflict with those in power.
