Coincidentally, I learned today that John Stockwell was found dead a couple weeks ago. He contended that, although the CIA did plan to poison Lumumba, he was ultimately beaten to death by hirelings of Congolese politicians who were aligned with the CIA. He did offer this vignette:

As you said, many of your photographs show how closely these depopulated Palestinian villages lie beside new Israeli construction, fenced off with vegetation growing over and obscuring them. What did the condition of these villages tell you about Israeli society?

Palestinian sites take different forms today. Some are destroyed, completely erased, or reduced to rubble, sometimes in nature in the middle of nowhere. In other places, surviving structures are scattered between Israeli houses, as in Haifa, or in Ijzim [now the Israeli moshav Kerem Maharal) and Ein Hod, where wealthy Palestinian houses are inhabited by Israelis. Some sites are abandoned, while others are reused in strange ways: a Palestinian school may become an Israeli school, as in Al-Tira, or a mosque may be turned into an animal shelter, as in Kawfakha.

But when you compare what remains today with what was there in 1948, it tells you a great deal about the scale of destruction and ethnic cleansing. You can look at places like Al-Manshiyya or villages where only one last structure remains, while the original plans show hundreds of houses [that were] completely wiped out. [In other areas,] entire villages were erased. In places like the Jaffa district, not a single Palestinian village survived.

It is also very telling to look at what Israelis did with the structures that survived — the repeated efforts to remove Palestinian traces. For example, there have been recent calls by [Israeli National Security Minister Itamar] Ben Gvir to remove the Palestinian graveyard in Balad Al-Sheikh, near Haifa, because it contains the grave of [Izzeddin] Al-Qassam [the Syrian-born preacher and anti-colonial militant who became a symbol of Palestinian resistance during the British Mandate, and for whom Hamas’s military wing is named]. In Lifta, on the outskirts of Jerusalem there have been plans to redevelop the site into resorts or hotels.

At the same time, I learned that Israelis often do not feel guilt when they look at these structures. Their narrative allows them to see these places in a way that justifies what happened, instead of confronting the fact that ethnic cleansing was done for the sake of ethnic cleansing. That was one of the main conclusions of my research: even villages that cooperated with the Zionist movement and villages inhabited by Algerians were displaced. There are also cases like Zakariyya, whose people were displaced in 1950, two years after Nakba.

There is something else at work, too, with these attacks on Polanski’s politics. There is a delegitimising of the Palestinian rights that he seeks to stand up for. Melanie Phillips has previously claimed that “If you support the Palestinian Arab cause today, you are facilitating deranged and murderous Jew-hatred.” At an event last year she declared: “There is no such thing as the Palestinian people … the Jews are the only people who have any entitlement to any of this land.” And if that left room for doubt, she added: “And they are the only people who have an entitlement to all of it.”

There is a lesson here about British political discourse. Say almost anything about Palestinians, however inflammatory, and your career will remain intact. Oppose their destruction, and you will be vilified.

So I’ve been doing this for a while, and over the last two years, I’ve been to Gaza twice and the West Bank. What I witnessed there really compelled me to get more involved. I’ve seen war before; I’ve been to Iraq. I know the horrors of war, but what I witnessed was a genocide. I saw more children and civilians blown up than ever in my life. It was so horrible that when I came back, I felt it was my obligation to go to Congress and speak about what I had seen. These are American bombs that are being dropped. These are our taxpayer dollars that are being used.

Zohran Mamdani, who took office as NYC Mayor in January 2026, states that Israel has a right to exist as a state with equal rights for all its inhabitants, but he refuses to recognize its right to exist specifically as a Jewish state. He positions his stance on universalist terms, arguing against any state built on religious or racial hierarchy, while advocating for an end to the occupation of Palestinian territories.

I recently had this needlessly fancy motorized spray arm go out and I was able to just replace the whole thing with this $20 part and it works perfectly. I considered it a small miracle that they hadn't changed the coupling for it.
