A Blue-winged Teal drake – a small, buff-colored dabbling duck speckled with darker spots with a bluish head and a prominent white vertical stripe in front of its eye extending down below its black bill – floats calmly on a shallow marsh among bits of emerging vegetation. Its tail feathers are primarily black, striped with white, with just a patch of vibrant blue toward its wings. Its body is feathered with black and white feathers that make it appear gray from a distance, and it has a bright green patch toward its tail feathers between its wings and body.
