Uber's CTO Praveen Neppalli Naga told The Information in April that the firm had already burnt through its entire 2026 AI coding tools budget in just four months. That comes after the company had actively incentivized adoption through internal leaderboards ranking teams by AI tool usage.

The reports may throw cold water on the bets tech's biggest firms have placed on the technology. While some cling to the promise of an Al "renaissance" or "revolution," the cost of adoption is proving a stubborn bottleneck. These developments also suggest that the economics of replacing or augmenting human labor with AI may be more complicated than some early forecasts originally implied. That echoes what Bryan Catanzaro, vice president of applied deep learning at Nvidia, recently said in an interview with Axios.

We are just days away from the 47th anniversary of the White Night riots in San Francisco, which took place on May 21, 1979.

This is what it feels like to be a trans person in an increasingly authoritarians and autocratic America in 2026.

Every path that should lead to safety, to justice, to the simple baseline dignity of existing in public, has been engineered to dead-end. Advocate peacefully through institutions—the courts are captured by conservative super-majorities who will never uphold your rights. Build coalitions and watch the funding dry up as foundations flee and donors go silent, and as organizations like the Human Rights Campaign hemorrhage staff in mass layoffs. Appeal to moderates but the Overton window has already shifted so far that your mere existence is now the "extreme" position. Exhibit any outrage at the indignities perpetrated against you and you confirm the narrative they've spent years constructing that you are violent, dangerous, a threat to children. Stay quiet, get erased quietly. Every option looks like an exit. None of them actually terminates the loop.

Matas founded BetterHelp in 2013, and sold it two years later to Teladoc, a U.S. company traded on the New York Stock Exchange that specializes in telemedicine services. Coincidentally, BetterHelp's chief competitor, Talkspace, was also founded by Israelis - husband and wife Oren and Roni Frank. So at present, 90% of the online mental health services market in the United States is controlled by companies founded by Israeli entrepreneurs.

The online psychotherapy service offered by BetterHelp sounds like it was created especially for the coronavirus crisis. Millions of people around the world are suffering from anxiety, loneliness and emotional distress because of lockdowns and fears for their health and financial wellbeing. But they can't leave the house to get help. For them, BetterHelp has 10,000 certified therapists available by video, telephone or chat.

"Even though we have grown quite quickly in the last few years, the last few months have been something else altogether. The growth is like nothing we've seen before," president and founder Alon Matas told TheMarker. "For problems of depression, anxiety and tension, we've seen an increase of more than 100% in inquiries, compared with March through July in 2019, both by current and new users. It's all due to the stress and anxiety of the health and economic situation, and the bleak mood."

But it's more than coronavirus restrictions that have made online therapy a viable option. "There's also a long-term trend of people growing accustomed to working online.
