prairie-style socialism and postcards
a lot of impressive people played here over its 65 years as a baseball stadium—from josh gibson to randy johnson, dave debusschere to bob uecker—but maybe most importantly it was henry aaron's first home in pro ball, he played here for the indianapolis clowns of the negro leagues in the early 1950s
pierre & wright were the architects, but the real meat of the work was osborn engineering, specialists in early concrete and steel stadiums—they also did old yankee, tiger, fenway, and comiskey
it's a little odd—this elevation was faithfully restored, but the inner curve of the grandstand was basically completely demolished
the kenzi shiokava show at the MCA isn’t huge but it’s really, really enjoyable
this postcard of red bird stadium in columbus ohio was also in the file, presumably as a "hey make it look like this"
slight change was made to the copy on the back, and the retouched photo was submitted and there were instructions in the file to submit the retouched photo to w. teich (i assume this was walter teich, one of the company owner's sons)
like with many night postcards, the actual photo was taken during the day and retouched and colored as a night view
stumbled on the production file for this gorgeous linen postcard of old comiskey park at the newberry library yesterday
fun little project my friend turned me on to—generates pieces from the art institute digital collection that have been viewed fewer than 200 times since 2010, for example this sketch by bertrand goldberg, rembrandt etching, ensor etching iamwillwang.com/notes/has-no...
incredibly last minute but i guess the city is hosting a watch party tonight after all
i’ve visited the smart museum a dozen times at least since it was installed in 2019, but only yesterday did it register that there’s a richard serra sculpture in the middle of the courtyard
already loved sky ride but also hell yes blockclubchicago.org/2026/07/06/m...
the line to get into recess ahead of the mexico match wraps around the full block over the highway and geez what a miss from the mayor, the parks district, and dcase that chicago doesn’t have a single central watch party
yeah i’m sure some guy at “GiveMeSport” is connected enough to get the exclusive here, this is very credible
niche sports tweet but nba hall-of-famer dave debusschere pitched for the white sox?!
don’t love that wendella’s tour boat is flying a christian nationalist flag if you needed a reason to recommend literally any other architectural tour boat operator
oof the chicago ave bridge rebuild site flooded, there’s a cherry picker and an excavator under that water
but it was expensive for the city to own and maintain it they got ahead of the dead mall thing and mostly demolished it in 2008, replacing it with a new version of the commons in 2011, designed by koetter kim and CSO architects
columbus, indiana had its own little urban renewal spasm, demolishing this italianate block for a shopping center and parking lot ...but because it was columbus, they hired césar pelli to design their renewal mall, the commons
it's so funny that one of things the german national team is blaming their bad world cup on is that they had such a great time in chicago it made their actual basecamp in winston-salem seem deadly boring and depressing in comparison www.bild.de/sport/fussba...
