A hysterical David Blunkett told the prison service to call in the army and "machine gun" inmates in order to regain control of a riot-torn prison, the former director general of the prison service, Martin Narey, claims today.

In a response to the former home secretary's memoirs, The Blunkett Tapes, Mr Narey said that Mr Blunkett "shrieked" down the phone to him that he did not care about the possible loss of life among staff or prisoners during efforts to retake Lincoln jail, which had been taken over by rioting inmates in October 2002.

Prepping to pod about the whole Defense Investment Plan and WAR and why all the handsome generals want all the bombs NOW - it's always about the "Russian Threat" that is so imminent by 2030 that it's all couched in hypotheticals about how the Ukraine war is over and Russia will just be bored:

Sir Keir Starmer, the outgoing prime minister, warned in June: “Nato of course, [is] the single most effective military alliance the world has ever seen. If you needed any reminder about the importance of this, it is our intelligence assessment, and the assessment of other countries in Nato, that there could be an attack by Russia on Nato as soon as 2030.”

His remarks went beyond that of Mark Rutte, the alliance’s secretary general, who said in a speech at Chatham House in London last year that Russia could be “ready” to use military force in 2030.

Lieutenant General Christian Freuding, Germany’s army chief, said this year that “all 32 Nato partners agree that Russia might have the capability to invade a Nato partner country in 2029”.

British army chiefs held a war game in London and one officer said that 2030 “is where we see the threat from Russia to be at its most acute”.

BBC News:

Thames Water has returned to a full-year profit after hiking its customers bills by 40% last year.

The UK's largest water company reported post-tax income of £113m for the 12 months to the end of March, swinging from a £1.51bn post-tax loss the previous year.

However, the firm's net debt also swelled to £18.5bn from £16.8bn as it said it "continued to fund the business through... debt and internally generated cash flows".

Chief executive Chris Weston said: "The progress we have made in turning the company around has meant we are now performing better."

“The associated land footprint of generating that electricity in 2030 would exceed 14,000 sq km, roughly the area of Northern Ireland,” it says.

“The estimated 9.3 trillion litres of water used by data centres would meet the drinking water needs of Earth’s 8.1 billion people for about 1.6 years.”

Ireland is described as “a live cautionary example” of energy demand running ahead of infrastructure, with data centres using electricity equivalent to all urban households combined.

apart from the general nonsensical nature of "defense AI", do any of these numbers strike you as realistic? Knowing how cartoonishly expensive AI stuff is everywhere else? Do we really think 20mln for "AI underwater dominance" is enough and will deliver something useable to counter Russian subs?

35. Over the next four years, we will invest in AI-focussed areas across Defence, including:
• Taskforce RAID: £100m to deliver against the four ‘challenge sets’ and prime Defence
for a future of fast and effective AI adoption for warfighting.
• Project FRONTIER AI: £100m in Project FRONTIER and other enablers to drive
preparedness for Transformational AI. Project FRONTIER is the enduring means for
decision support applications across Defence at all classifications.
• Land AI C2: £80m on Land AI C2 to deliver applications that help commanders make
faster and better decisions.
• AI for underwater dominance: £20m on AI for underwater dominance that will provide
greater capacity for the large volumes of data gathered in underwater surveillance.

In June 2022, Dannatt lobbied ministers and officials to provide millions of pounds in financial support for a venture looking to purchase a fertiliser factory. Three days after the meeting with a minister, he was paid £2,000, followed by a further three payments of £2,000 months later.

In January 2023 and September 2024, at the instigation of executives at Teledyne, a US defence company that paid him, Dannatt wrote to Home Office ministers to lobby them for “assurances” the government was taking action against Palestine Action. The letters followed an attack by the group on the company’s factory.

In January 2024, Dannatt wrote to the UK’s top diplomat in Ghana to organise a meeting with her that he attended with the director of a British goldmine company. They used that meeting to lobby her to get support from the Ghanaian government for the company, in which Dannatt had shares.

Let us not forget the steady work of Margaret Hodge, who is progressing a comprehensive, cross-government anti-corruption strategy to be published later this year, and the Covid counter-fraud commissioner, Tom Hayhoe, whose work is so vital to restoring trust in government. And let us not forget what the government has already committed to in its first 12 months: replacing the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments, increasing the frequency of ministerial hospitality disclosures, scrapping hereditary peers, votes at 16, rolling out automatic voter registration, tightening up political party financing and empowering the Electoral Commission.

Are some MPs trying to do some good things in an utterly broken, dysfunctional political and economic system? Sure. Will 90% of them fight tooth and nail to preserve that system and go to any lengths to do so? Probably with even greater commitment.
