I feel like the bathroom fight in True Lies had to be at least a little bit of an influence on the bathroom fight in Mission: Impossible - Fallout (I know there's one in Casino Royale too but that feels less similar)

"It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney Australia. Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life.
The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free. They would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their incredible care.
More details will be shared later, but for now, on behalf of the family, we ask that you respect their privacy as they navigate this immeasurable loss."

need to see more movies that heavily feature Musok/Korean shamanism + exorcisms.

my letterboxd review of The Wailing: "hadn't seen this since 2016 and was surprised by how much of it I'd forgotten. like the movie starts out so much funnier than I'd remembered, it makes the terrifying shit that comes later even more effective by setting up a pleasant (and pleasantly spooky) sense of normalcy before its tonal/literal descent into hell. one of my favorite horror joints of the last decade, would probably pair well with the slightly less dread-inducing Exhuma.

I also hope the girl sitting in my row who kept screaming at everything (e.g. a kabuki mask, a door opening) and then bounced before the Q&A is okay."

sometimes when I'm struggling to write an essay I will read a negative review of the film because anger fuels me. so here's Pauline Kael's extremely abridged condemnation of Thief from her book Taking It All In. (the whole thing is like 5 pages lol.)

Pauline Kael bot: "[THIEF] I hated this movie from beginning to end...Is grandiloquent masochism so appealing to men that they'll buy this cosmic drizzle? (I think it's unlikely that many women will.) It's the fantasy of being the best of men—the toughest and most anguished. (1981)"
