As a Court Appointed Special Advocate I’m HORRIFIED at how poorly the CPS system provides necessary support & services for children we KNOW have been abused/neglected. We can’t even get abused/neglected kids Trauma Assessments where I live & the system regularly compounds childhood trauma.

A Lesson From Lincoln

Last weekend, my husband and I joined several other family members at the University of Chicago, to watch our youngest granddaughter graduate from the College. It was an impressive ceremony, but the absolute highlight was a brief and very powerful speech by Alison LaCroix.
LaCroix- the Robert Newton Reid Professor of Law at UC- is also an Associate Member of the university's History Department. She's a scholar of US legal history specializing in constitutional law, federalism, and eighteenth-and nineteenth-century legal thought, and the author of two important books: The Interbellum Constitution: Union, Commerce, and Slavery in the Age of Federalisms and The Ideological Origins of American Federalism.
To be candid, when I read the program and LaCroix's bio, I expected the sort of speech we academic types typically deliver and enjoy-

filled with meaty scholarship and academic jargon and not exactly geared to the interests of the parents and grandparents worried about the
"here and now" state of the nation in which our progeny will need to make their way.
I was wrong. Actually, I was mesmerized.
LaCroix delivered a speech that not only connected with the audience, but that was profoundly critical of Trump and his administration without ever mentioning either.
It was a master class in the use of accurate history to make a contemporary point.
She opened with a story about Abraham Lincoln before he became a historical figure — when he was a 28-year-old lawyer just beginning his career (not unlike the new UChicago graduates). She recounted how Lincoln had been invited to address a club in Springfield, Illinois, sponsored by that era's "lyceum movement" - public gatherings in which attendees debated politics, science, and the arts.
In that 1838 speech, Lincoln credited the country's founders with the "fundamental blessings" of the nation's institutions; he then turned to warn about a threat to that founding vision: mob rule (a "mobocratic spirit") that threatened to leave citizens alienated from their government. Lincoln warned that such a

mobocratic spirit would facilitate the potential rise of a tyrant-something that is possible-or even likely- when a people loses their attachment to its government.
Lincoln's remedy, LaCroix explained, was the need to bind citizens to their republic through the "political religion" of the rule of law, through courts that would uphold the principles of the Declaration of Independence and the provisions of the Constitution.
LaCroix concluded with the observation that, at the time of that speech, the young Lincoln "did not know what was coming." He had no inkling of the pivotal role he would play in the nation's future, but what he could do at that time of his life was offer his listeners a set of ideas that would attach them to civic life rather than alienating them from it.

I had not heard the phrase "the mobocratic spirit," but it is a perfect description of MAGA.

What Lincoln understood and emphasized was the central element of true Americanism, which is allegiance to a specific approach to human governance. It is that allegiance that separates citizens of the United States from the "blood and soil" beliefs that underlie fascist regimes
and motivate Trump's MAGA base. In a recent speech, Georgia Senator John Ossoff recently reaffirmed Lincoln's understanding of what makes one an American, insisting that "Our national greatness flows not through our blood or our genes, but through our ideas. Americans are not a race. We're a people united not by ethnicity, but by our shared convictions. And that is what makes us exceptional."
Today, Americans are engaged in a civil war of sorts. We are fighting an existential battle between those of us "woke" folks who believe in the America described by Lincoln and Ossoff and the MAGA Republicans insisting that only certain people-the "blood and soil" Christian nationalists-can be "real Americans."

A friend our ours was just complaining to me that their cats insist on being fed wet food every four hours (including a 1am feeding) and it took everything I had to not point out the fact that if your cats are prissy assholes you might have at some point unwittingly tolerated or encouraged their worst behavior.
My cat would lose his shit if he met someone willing or crazy enough to hand feed him the freshest baked slice of meat & cheese lovers pizza hourly.
