LW: Achilles Returns (2026). Less an Odyssey mockbuster, more a micro budget spin off, Achilles now in the modern day fighting Medusa: the star also wrote/directed/hummed the music, it’s filled with stock footage and it’s still only 50 minutes long. Painfully earnest and genuinely hilarious.

LW: Cat’s Eye (1985), not the best horror anthology of the 80s, quite slight in fact, based on pretty tame King: but Quitters Inc is utterly great, The Ledge is good fun, & even if I didn’t care for General and its riff on Trilogy of Terror, it stars a cat, and cats are great. #FilmSky

Watched the first episode of The Killings at Parrish Station & I don’t know if this is a violent crime thriller, whodunnit or a cosmic horror, or maybe all of the above, but I’m hooked on this little Aussie show already. Fast paced, non linear, and I just plain want to know what is even going on!

LW: Normal (2025) Utter gibberish: a nonsensical and hackneyed script straight out of an 80s B movie, the internal logic of playground makebelieve, but lashings of blood soaked fun, body parts flying everywhere, Rube Goldberg deaths abound; Wheatley has fun with it, Odenkirk game for the silliness.

Had to dig out a book to find the man himself talking about it (apocalyptic may be the wrong word, but some “event” has killed lots of people and it’s set in the future). From Alan Jones Profondo Argento:

“The major difference between the two films is that Tenebrae isn't based in the present but five or more years in the tuture. It was never mean to be a story about something that is happening now.
It isn't exactly my Blade Runner, of course, but nevertheless a step into the world of tomorrow. If you watch the film with this perspective in mind, it will become very apparent. Tenebrae occurs in a world inhabited by fewer people with the result that the remainder is wealthier and less crowded.
Something has happened to make it that way but no one remembers, or wants to remember. That was my stance when I made the film but I don't expect the audience to care too much because if they miss it, they won't be any less entertained. In Suspiria, when the blind man goes to the beer hall, he sits at the exact same table where the famous Munich speech was given that heralded the start of the Nazi movement. I have a fondness for automatic writing like that, and whether the audience wants to pick up on it or not, it is there if they want to see it”.

100 not out! Mel is one of my heroes, one of the coolest guys ever, not just as a writer & director but using his production house to champion eclectic cinema (The Elephant Man, The Fly, My Favorite Year) Anyway: my favourite of his: Hitchcock spoof High Anxiety. I got it, I got it, I don’t got it

The film poster for Mel Brooks’ High Anxiety (1977). Some say you didn’t need a spoof of Hitchcock films as the man himself was funny enough, but that assumes spoofs are mean spirited. High Anxiety is a loving homage to Hitch, full of pastiches of the master’s tropes, but still just a framework for Brooks’ big brash humour. I may be biased in this, as it was my parents favourite movie when I was growing up, we had it on VHS, and I watched it over and over. In fact, I saw it before I had seen any Hitchcock movies, so discovering the master of suspense became even more joyous, as I saw Brooks reflected back at me, a constant “huh that’s where that came from”, alongside experiencing these great titles on their own merits. It may not be Brooks best film (Blazing Saddles or Young Frankenstein may take that), but High Anxiety is my favourite, and he will always be one of my heroes. Love ya, Mel. I hope you really do live until you’re a 2000 year old man. ❤️

Peter Lorre’s birthday, most are focussing on his work in noir (fair), but you could check out his segment from Corman’s Tales of Terror: The Black Cat, mashing that Poe story up with another (The Cask of Amontillado), Lorre a diminutive dipso cuckolded by a gloriously over acting Vincent Price.

Vincent Price chained up and being bricked into a wall by Peter Lorre, a promotional still from Roger Corman’s 1962 anthology of Poe stories Tales of Terror. It’s jolly good fun, not the best of the Corman “Poe cycle” but well worth a watch.

It’s (Dr) Peter Weller’s birthday, & you could watch Robocop, The Naked Lunch, the brilliant Cabinet of Curiosities episode The Viewing (dir. by Panos Cosmatos!) or even Buckeroo Banzai (all great choices), but may I suggest the under appreciated and under seen 1995 sci fi horror Screamers?

It’s Kenneth Connor’s birthday, remember him by checking out What a Carve Up (1961) a jolly fun murder mystery comedy starring Connor, Sid James, Michael Gough and Donald Pleasance. You’d think well done examples of this would be common, but they aren’t. This one gets the balance just right.
