Retired Earth Science faculty and Interim President of Diablo Valley College. Now I travel, take photos and share them. All photos are mine, unless otherwise stated.
Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #PeekABoo. From last years trip to the Westman Islands in #Iceland, here are two puffins peeking out from their burrow. #birds #BirdPhotography #TravelPhotography
It's #InternationalCatDay. To celebrate I went back to my #Africa safari files for these photos. Lions, Cheetahs and Leopards, oh my! #SouthAfrica #Zimbabwe #Zambia #Botswana #WildlifePhotography #TravelPhotography
How about #FoxyFriday? On a recent expedition cruise to circumnavigate the #Svalbard Archipelago,we encountered many #ArcticFoxes. Their coats were changing from white to brown. Most often found at the base of a tall cliff where birds were nesting, looking for fledglings that didn't make it. #Norway
Welcome to #ForestFriday. In the far #Arctic, trees are not found, but there is one 'woody stem' plant. The Salix herbacea (dwarf willow), barely 5 cm (2 inches) tall grows in moist, protected areas of the tundra. Rounded, green leaves in a dense mat. #Svalbard #Norway
For #InsectThursday here is a tiny Praying Mantis on a Heliconia psittacorum, commonly known as Parrot's Beak in the tropical rainforest of #Peru. This was taken at one of the Eco-Lodges we used while staying in the rainforest. #Insects #SouthAmerica #TravelPhotography
Rob Crank has ordained today's theme for #BirdOfTheDay to be #LongLegs. To that end, here's a Great Blue Heron that we came upon as we walked through town on the way home from the store. The bird was standing in an empty lot about six blocks from the bay. #birds #BirdPhotography #MorroBay #California
Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #FabulousWaders. These two Long-billed Curlews (Numenius americanus) are wading in the surf and searching for snacks. Taken near Morro Bay, California on a grey, overcast summer day. #birds #BirdPhotography #MorroBay #CaliforniaCoast
Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BestOfJuly. On a recent trip to circumnavigate the #Svalbard Archipelago, we saw many Brünich's guillemots (thick-billed murre). They always seem to have trouble getting airborne from the water. Sometimes, they never get airborne. Always fun to watch. #birds #Norway
For today's #Wildlife post, here's a Polar Bear mom and cub resting on a patch of snow. We watched them swim to this island in the #Svalbard Archipelago and then climb up onto the island. Photo is a little fuzzy because it is a high zoom. #Nature #WildlifePhotography #Norway #ArcticTravel
#EgretsAndHerons is the theme for today's #BirdOfTheDay. Here's a Great White Egret and an African Sacred Ibis along the Zambezi River in #Zambia. #birds #BirdPhotography #Africa
I rarely post two #BirdOfTheDay photos, but couldn't resist with today's theme of #YourChoice. With the utmost respect and credit to Charles Schulz, here is a White-hooded vulture, 'waiting patiently for a victim' in #Zimbabwe. #bird #BirdPhotography #Africa
Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #YourChoice. I've been waiting for a BOTD category of #BirdOnAHippo, but it never came 😂. So, I'll use this opportunity to post an African Jacana on the back of a Hippo, along with two Red-billed Oxpeckers, in the background. #birds #BirdPhotography #Africa #Botswana
Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #MultiColor. To that end, here's a Red Phalarope in breeding plumage. Photo taken in the Svalbard Archipelago on July 20 of this year. #bird #BirdPhotography #Svalbard #Spitsbergen #Norway
Welcome to #WaterfallWednesday. This ice waterfall is on Kvitoya Island (extreme eastern edge of the Svalbard Archipelago). The island is almost entirely ice cap, with steep ice cliffs all around. #Svalbard #Spitsbergen #Norway
Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #EmeraldBackdrop. It can be challenging to find such a backdrop in the land of rock and ice, but here is a Parasitic Jaeger (Stercorarius parasiticus), also known as the Arctic Skua in Europe. Taken in northern Svalbard on July 20 of this year. #birds #BirdPhotography
First hand evidence. This panorama photo was taken on July 13, 2026 at a latitude of 81.5 degrees North, looking northward. Open water with patchy sea ice less than 600 statute miles from the North Pole. We turned here and headed SE back to the Svalbard archipelago. #ClimateChange #ArcticWarming
Greetings. Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Grey, any bird with grey in its plumage. Here is a Barnacle goose and gosling from Longyearbyen, Norway. Hard to tell if the gosling is in focus because they are so fluffy. #Svalbard #Norway #birds #BirdPhotography #WildlifePhotography
It's #StunDay and I have to go back to the sunset photos that I recently took at Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia. Probably the most stunning sunset I've ever photographed. I hope you enjoy it. #Sunset #Bolivia #SalardeUyuni
Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Rotund. While not perfectly rotund, at least in profile, this Helmeted Guinea Fowl has a very rotund body. Taken in #Zambia #Africa. #bird #BirdPhotography #SafariPhotography
For #Scape day, here are some colorful fishing boats in the harbor at Paracas, Peru. #TravelPhotography #Peru
It's #FlyDay, and here's a Brown Pelican flying away from the camera. I like how its right wing tip just touches the surface as it heads toward the ocean. #birds #BirdPhotography #CentralCoastCalifornia
Let's start a #TurtleThursday meme. Here's a short video of an Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle from earlier this year. I was scanning the ocean floor for fish and when I looked up, there it was - and VERY close. And that side-eye look! #Hawaii #GoPro #WildlifePhotography
Today’s theme for #BirdOfTheDay is #MultiColour. This Lilac-breasted Roller fills the bill (pun intended) perfectly. #bird. #BirdPhotography #Africa #Zimbabwe
#InFlight is the theme for today's #BirdOfTheDay. Here's an African Sacred Ibis flying over a Great Egret along the Zambezi River in #Botswana. #birds #BirdPhotography #Africa
Today's theme for #BirdOfTheDay is #SilentPresence. Contemplative, watchful and serene. This is a Crested Barbet from South Africa. #Africa #birds #BirdPhotography #WildlifePhotography
