Turns out toilet breaks were possible after all 🚽 Members stood together, refused to back down and secured an important victory. The V&A has agreed to introduce two paid 15-minute breaks for staff at Storehouse after months of campaigning by Prospect members.

For months, Prospect has been calling out Capita's failures and standing up for members left waiting for pension payments and facing hardship. Now it's time to end Capita's contract and bring the Civil Service Pension Scheme back in-house. Read our response to the latest government announcement.

Prospect Deputy General Secretary Steve Thomas said:

“This shambolic transfer has let down hard working civil servants who have faced real hardship as a result of a series of failings by Capita and others.

“The government has worked hard to try and rescue the situation, and we thank them for their efforts, but it is right that they are now imposing these sanctions and considering bringing this service back in house.

“In the short term, Capita must urgently return this service to the required standard, and must be held to account if they are unable to do so. But it is now obvious to all that civil service pensions are simply too important to be left in the hands of a company with such a dismal record of failure, it is time to sack Capita and take our members’ pensions back from this hopeless company.”

Mike Clancy, General Secretary of Prospect, said:

“The attempted murder in Belfast was horrific and we want to express solidarity with the victim and his family.

“But the indiscriminate targeting of migrant families we have seen in response is totally unacceptable and shames our country. We must all stand in solidarity with those affected by this racist violence.

“We must also be clear about what is driving this behaviour. Elon Musk continues to use his X platform to promote far-right content and interfere in the politics of the UK. It is increasingly clear that X is not a social media app but a far right organising tool with Musk himself actively supporting and promoting people who are calling for violence and far right policies.

“Government use of X legitimises it as a platform, and also results in civil service communications officers having to wade through racist content while doing their jobs. We need to stand up to racism and the far right – that has to start with creating spaces for dialogue that aren’t poisoned by racism. We call on the Government to abandon its use of X and use the expertise of specialist civil servants to develop alternative approaches to communications.”

Not only does this directly affect our members working in the civil service, but political chaos leads to economic instability that affects all working people.

Having just got the Employment Rights Act on the statute book, we need a government focused on delivery that can ensure the roadmap is met and these rights are delivered in full.

This cannot be a wasted year of drift and division in government.

We need calm heads to prevail in the coming days.
