The pattern is clear once you know what to look for. MAGA appeals to people who need to feel special, who need enemies to blame, who need simple answers to complex problems. It attracts those who mistake confidence for competence, who confuse being loud with being right, who think that admitting uncertainty is weakness.
It’s not about education or geography or even politics. It’s about character. It’s about whether you can tolerate complexity, whether you can admit mistakes, whether you can see other people as fully human.
The scary thing about MAGA isn’t that it’s obviously evil—it’s that it’s appealing to people who think they’re good. It offers them a way to feel righteous about their resentments, patriotic about their prejudices, and principled about their selfishness.

I am opposed to the proposed rule "Improving Performance, Accountability and Responsiveness in the Civil Service" because its stated objective is not what it says, but rather it is an underhanded attempt to degrade the civil service. The true objective of the proposed rule, to make it easy to fire civil servants and replace them with partisan actors, flies in the face of the noble purpose of our civil service.
Our country's civil service has a distinguished record of continuity and expertise that has kept Americans safe and secure for decades. Food safety, drug safety, national security, and hundreds of other "keep the public safe" government endeavors can only be carried out via non-partisan data collection, research, and public outreach/service.
In other words, making it easier to fire knowledgeable, experienced civil servants, particularly given this administration's recent record of arbitrary reduction and elimination of crucial public services, is a very bad idea.

The Kafkaesque nature of Biden’s broadband application process was not, in fact, the result of “everything bagel liberalism,” pressure from doctrinaire leftists, or Democratic politicians’ penchant for governing through checklists, which Klein and his co-author, Derek Thompson, frame in Abundance as the key obstacles to housing security, decarbonization, and other critical 21st century needs.

Rather, this burdensome procedure was created at the insistence of vote-withholding Republican senators and their cable industry donors — companies seeking to block funding to upstarts that might challenge their regional telecom monopolies or force them to provide affordable prices for broadband. After they loaded up the funding legislation with a Byzantine process, telecom giants and GOP-led states — not protocol-obsessed lefties or overly rigid bureaucrats — then manufactured a monthslong fight over what constitutes “affordable” rates, delaying quick funding for the build-out.

Last week, Abundance co-author Ezra Klein went viral on social media. In a widely shared video clip from Jon Stewart’s podcast, Klein described the maddeningly bureaucratic process for deploying rural broadband funding under the Biden administration’s bipartisan infrastructure bill — a procedure so cumbersome that barely any of the entities seeking these grants have even finished the application process, years after the bill’s passage.

The anecdote hit hard — Stewart groaned and cursed as Klein elegantly demonstrated the central thesis of his book, Abundance: Red tape and overregulation, allegedly the outgrowth of progressives’ obsession with process over outcomes, have become primary drivers of scarcity in America. Boosted by Fox News, Elon Musk, and thousands of retweets, the soundbite was the kind of fable of inefficient liberal government that Ronald Reagan told throughout the 1980s.

There was just one problem with the story’s premise: It is demonstrably false.

Mr. Trump has long feuded with officials over his own tax compliance. As a candidate in 2016, he said he had been under audit for years and believed it was “very unfair.” The Trump Organization was found guilty of tax fraud in 2022, and a New York Times investigation in 2018 found Mr. Trump participated in tax schemes in the 1990s that included instances of fraud.

The Trump administration laid off 7,000 I.R.S. probationary employees this year. (They have been rehired after court orders and in some cases have been asked to return to work.) And the agency lost 5,000 employees who opted to take a buyout offer.

If the Trump administration were to cut I.R.S. staffing levels by the more extreme 50 percent, the former Biden Treasury official Natasha Sarin, now president of the Budget Lab at Yale, estimates a loss of $350 billion to $2.4 trillion in revenue over 10 years.

Although that estimate published by the lab covers a wide range, she said it was clear that funding the I.R.S. pays for itself.

Lots of reaching-for-a-justification-for-trump in that essay. The author is right that "the system" is broken & ppl are frustrated... but echoes too much RW propaganda ("many" workers enraged by DEI, etc.). But trump isn't the solution to income inequality, climate change, or dark money influence

We haven't even looked if there is an "upgrade" pkg for DirecTV. Because we live on a very tight budget. We would rather budget a little money for boat gas in order to occasionally day cruise on our 1987 little boat than upgrade our tv package. It's a matter of priorities.
