A finished game of a geoguessr game where you have to click on every country in the world as it's named. It shows a world map, countries mostly filled out in white, with overlapping name tags. The end result is 95 out of 195 countries, at 95% correct, done in 9 minutes 30. A handful of countries are marked yellow for being one or two clicks off.

Related to success in combat being "nothing happens", here's a snippet from the 7th Sea 2e book about missing in combat, and active defense, and every action changing the circumstances instead of retaining the status quo. I quite like it.

"I Dodge"

You may notice there is no "Dodge" skill. This is intentional. We don't want any player to ever say, "I dodge." Why? Because it's boring.

Instead of saying, "I don't want to get hit," explain how your character acts to avoid getting hit. Don't just "dodge." Instead, cut the rope holding the chandelier and swing up to the roof. Jump under your enemy's blade so you are standing behind him. Kick the candelabra's hot wax into your enemy's eyes as he thrusts his sword toward you.

You don't want to say, "I dodge" because that just maintains the status quo of the scene. A success in that case means that nothing changes. Instead, use your Action to change the circumstance of the scene. Throw a table on them. Make the other people in the room laugh for trying to stab you. Demoralize them. Confuse your opponent into striking someone else.

Be creative. Don't be passive. Don't use your Risk to just say "No." Use your Risk to take action.

Went to a bookstore today, returned with a small haul.

A book for learning JLPT vocabulary, from N5 to N1, taught in Chinese. The cover has a lot of advertising for itself on it, promising being the only book necessary passing the N1 level starting from zero, and definitely matching JLPT requirements.

A book about the history of LGBTQ+ rights in Taiwan over the last 35 years. There's a pride flag with a cutout of Taiwan on the cover, along with the title (Taiwan Love Pride LGBTQ+ Rights 35th 1990 - 2026) in various pride flag colors.

Still reading through Draw Steel, and the advice it's giving in the GM section on how to prep an adventure is very urgh. It supposes a linear path of setpiece scenes as the default that you may deviate from slightly every now and then, as a treat. Player choice *may* even have consequences! 🤯 1/

Excerpt from the Draw Steel rulebook, from the section "Plan Scenes":

When you're thinking about scenes, write down which sites and NPCs are tied to those scenes, then try to arrange them in an order that makes sense for the story. It might be that after your inciting incident, certain scenes can be tackled in any order. For example, if the adventure goal is to recover three pieces of an ancient staff before the villain does, the heroes might be able to explore the three sites where the pieces are hidden in any order they choose. Their choice might even have consequences. It might be that the first site they choose has none of the villain's lackeys investigating yet, the second site features a showdown with those lackeys, and the third site has already been cleaned out by the villain by the time the characters get there! Other scenes might have to happen more linearly. An investigation typically includes a trail of clues that takes the heroes from one scene to the next, but the players can surprise you.

Don't get married to the order in which you plan your scenes. If the heroes have terrible luck with dice in a couple of combat encounters, they might stop to take a respite and regain their Stamina and Recoveries before you anticipated they would. If the heroes are unraveling a mystery, they might make unexpected deductions or good guesses that allow them to skip a scene altogether! This is part of the fun of the game. The dice and the players will surprise you.

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

The fiction is used similarly to most trad games, to determine stat/skill/difficulty being used, but beyond that, there is no further fictional effect. The only effects are mechanical, and it's advised to default to generic consequences (eg. next combat is harder). This becomes clear in the example.

Montage Test Round 1
When the test begins, the Director sets the scene. They tell the players that the desert has extreme temperatures, sudden sandstorms, high dunes to cross, deep sand, chasms, and quicksand lakes. The Director decides that the challenges of dunes, deep sand, and quicksand can be tackled multiple times in the test, since the Infinite Desert is filled with these hazards.

Urdoncara, a fury, starts things off by asking to make an Intuition test using the Nature skill to predict the best times of day to travel and rest. She wants the party to avoid the worst of the desert's extreme weather phenomena, so that the journey is quickened. The Director decides this is an easy test. Urdoncara makes the test and gets a total of 12, earning 1 success for the montage test.

I left it outside in the sun and when I went to pick it up, it was saying "temperature too high! Let phone cool down before using again", and then within a few hours it was gone.

Okay, so full transparency. I did dip it in a pool after it said it was too hot. I was told not to do that before doing so, but my hubris said "nah these things are waterproof" and into the swim it went.
I go in the pool when I want to cool down, why can't my phone?
