Most of us would struggle to imagine a world in which U.S. soldiers, police officers, Border Patrol agents and elected leaders could be dragged before an international court, tried by judges from random countries across the globe, found guilty under international laws we neither consent to nor control, and then imprisoned thousands of miles from America.

Mary Moriarty, the county attorney for Hennepin County, told me that her office expects to decide in a few weeks whether the county has enough evidence to bring charges in the Good/Pretti cases, even absent the evidence withheld by the federal government

Minnesota law enforcement is currently in the process of examining publicly available evidence in both the Good and Pretti cases, including the many videos of both shootings taken by onlookers. “The BCA is being very meticulous and looking at absolutely all the video,” Moriarty told me in an interview. “And we would expect to have their investigations here relatively soon”—perhaps within the next few weeks. At that point, Hennepin County prosecutors will evaluate whether they can prove that crimes were committed, even without evidence from the federal government. If so, they could file criminal charges against Ross and the Customs and Border Protection officers who shot Pretti. But Moriarty emphasized that her office has yet to reach a decision as to whether any of the officers broke state law.

Michigan says it's for the America 250 celebration only, but Free DC has posted video of Michigan National Guard troops spotted way down by Georgetown, two miles from the Mall

"There might be a mix-up here," wrote Bobby Leddy, communications director for Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, in an email to NPR when presented with the list. "The Michigan National Guard are deployed only to support the America 250th celebration activities, not for the Joint Task Force mission."

Leddy clarified that Michigan guard members have "only been approved to assist with a variety of missions designed to ensure a safe and welcoming environment" for visitors to D.C., including things like traffic management and logistical operations.

Initiating a criminal investigation in order to harass political opponents or to
coerce them into taking official action-particularly official action that the federal
government cannot directly require those political opponents to take-is a blatantly
unlawful and unethical use the grand-jury process. See In re Grand Jury Subpoenas Nos.
[Redacted] & [Redacted], 2026 WL 710202, at *6 ("[I]f prosecutors are forbidden from
meddling with an official's duties, then they cannot use criminal investigations to
pressure him into enacting their preferred policies."). The only question, then, is
whether the challenged subpoenas were issued for one of these forbidden purposes.
The Court has no doubt that they were. On the one hand, the evidence that the
challenged subpoenas were issued for unlawful reasons is overwhelming.

As for the merits, the district court’s ruling is vulnerable on both Article
III standing and the merits. There is simply no historical precedent for trustees
of charitable quasi-public trusts like the Center to sue over intangible harms like
a renaming. Even if the courts could reach the merits, nothing in the Center’s
organic legislation prohibits adopting a secondary name, and doing so is hardly
unusual. The name “Kennedy” is still on the Building, but in a much stronger
form. The structure will now function as a financially sound and physically
beautiful enterprise, as opposed to a bankrupt eyesore that, for years, will look

The world of elite law firms remains unchanged. Business is still strong, the biggest firms continue to compete aggressively and the methods for generating business are the same. Ambitious young and midlevel partners need to bring in work to get ahead, and they are still working for it just like Ms. Ruemmler did — socializing with current and prospective clients over drinks, plying newly wealthy college friends over dinner for business and doing whatever they can to leverage their personal and professional relationships for referrals.

Castigating Ms. Ruemmler will not change the incentives that allowed Mr. Epstein to evade prosecution for so long, and it will not fix the deficiencies in federal law enforcement and the American legal system that ensure people like Mr. Epstein will always find a home.

her during the January 18, 2026 incident. (Dkt. 528.) The statement about
Fort chanting was incorrect, but the error was due to simple inadvertence.
The characterization of the camera as a weapon, though not ideal editing, is
immaterial. Although the Government regrets any error and does its best to
avoid them, mistakes are inevitable. When they occur, the Government
discloses and fixes them in accordance with Department policy and the

Parente said he will make a motion for sanctions for their clients so they can get their attorney's fees back, and in the hearings over those sanctions, he expects the prosecutors to testify in court regarding their conduct, and the defense will be able to cross-examine.

He also said they plan to file a claim with the Department of Justice's new "anti-weaponization" fund for financial relief for their clients.

it seems like DOJ is arguing that the proceeding being obstructed is its own compliance with Cannon's court order. I don't know if DOJ has argued previously that 1519 has applied in such scenarios, but I certainly haven't seen it used that way before

This is along the lines of what I have come to think of as the "Uno reverse" model of governance, where you take the same structures used previously for legitimate purposes and flip them to suggest that MAGA/white people/men/etc are actually the most oppressed and deserving of govt assistance

The Justice Department is modeling the program, in part, on a landmark $760 million settlement fund the Obama administration created to compensate Native American farmers and ranchers who were deprived access to federal subsidies for decades, one of those people said. Payments in that settlement came from the Judgment Fund, an uncapped pot of money that does not require congressional approval to make payments and is maintained by the Treasury Department.

On Friday, Pirro and other Trump administration officials also announced a broader surge in federal law enforcement resources to tackle crime in D.C. this summer.

The officials said they requested to increase the number of National Guard troops — whom President Donald Trump first deployed to the District last August — by about 1,500 guards. That would bring the number of troops to around 5,000. The surge would also involve more resources from the FBI, U.S. Marshals and other agencies, the officials said.
