eventually i figured out this arrangement: two friction stud-pins on a 3L bar, which makes a pretty tight connection around those gears.

this model basically started from the knee design. i wanted to use this gear arrangement because it seems quite anatomically correct, and also allows the leg to fully bend double. the only problem was the friction - it took a while to find a connection that could support the weight.
