Rapid Eye Electronics Ltd. (REEL)
@rapideyeelectro
REEL formed when three refugees from The Psychedelic Duelling Wars congealed in the psychic wreckage of a Somerset studio to record Wild Garlick electronics, eschatological ambience & brown acid techno on adapted bits of farm machinery & petrol cans
I’ve read Maldoror dozens of times but each time it feels like a particularly evil spell which is somehow ruining my wellbeing. Probably should stop #books Crossposted with @openvibe.social
Watched Agnes Varda’s Le Bonheur (Happiness) 1964 in a v rare break from football & it turned out to be devastating, sad & very beautiful in a different way. Slow(ish) cinema but mesmerisingly shot & you like everyone in it, despite everything. Very French, very mid-60s. A more complex time. #film
Now reading Vanishing World by Sayaka Murata - similar clipped & neurodiverse delivery to Convenience Store Woman with a strange, lightly surreal tale about the end of sex which weirdly reminds me of some of Houellebecq’s ‘science fiction’.
Now reading Han Kang’s The Vegetarian which is, so far, a gentle piece of social realism related to the familial difficulties of maintaining a (what appears to be) vegan diet…
Cheering myself up by watching Death Wish (1974). Never seen it, but I heard Jeff Goldblum’s in it & he’s always a laugh.
Rewatched Todd Solondz’s Happiness (1998). Wonderfully awful & more horrifying than most horror movies.
Quite like Hydration Breaks now #WorldCup2026
Wasn’t allowed ‘proper’ (ie expensive) football boots for ages as a kid but then randomly got Littbarski Adidas ones when we went to Butlins… those boots were capable of actual magic. If either Canada or South Africa had those we’d have just been watching a 7 goal thriller #WorldCup2026

From re-reading American Psycho, I found myself, via some spurious associative chain, wanting to watch Mike Leigh’s Naked (1993) again and was struck by how much it reminded me of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me… Now THERE’S a suggestion for the definitive trilogy of the early 90s
Thought you meant this Ludwig for a minute there…
Watching The Hustler (1961) because I was reading Hustlers, Beats and Others by Ned Polsky. Paul Newman is someone even more beautiful in black and white.
The Sound Barrow in action at Acid Horse 2026. It was a hot one, but spontaneous collaboration is the best kind.
Acid Horse festival today! We’re bringing The New Improved (and much louder) Sound Barrow again…
Christopher Nolan not including Stavros in his version of The Odyssey is testament to his utter contempt for Ancient Greek culture, art and pronunciation
I was majorly obsessed with this film as a kid and still sort of am. This was full of chunky details, I thought
Really liked Penance & the collection of short stories was pretty good but never got around to Eliza Clark’s Boy Parts until now. Fairly rips along, so far. 📚💙
Charity shop find today. Beautiful book of Literary Prefaces, edited and illustrated by Alastair Gray - beautifully typeset in red and black throughout. Even the errata slip is a little apologetic poem
Well, inexplicably never got around to this one in my callow youth so I think it’s time for Nabokov’s Pale Fire…
I know there are complex geopolitical & economic machinations, global environmental disaster, the veer towards fascism & the threat of AI but couldn’t SOME of this be sorted by a return to a universe where music weeklies gave out free 7”s every now and then?
Rarely get any good charity shop finds these days but got all of these from one shop today…
Only about half way through but depressing that Houellebecq feels more like realism as every year passes. Very much ‘not for everyone’ but also grimly fascinating.
Holiday reading is this short, devastating, fictionalisation of various meetings between the Nazis & foreign dignitaries in the lead up to WW2. Eric Vuillard’s Prix Goncourt wining The Order of the Day. It’s probably all true.
Rewatching The Last Seduction (1994) for the first time since it was at the cinema. Perhaps one of the most 90s movies ever but still holds up and Linda Fiorentino is perhaps the hottest anyone has ever been. Also: I need a cigarette.
