I'm Catholic and a Secular Franciscan. At this very minute I'm finishing a talk for a Worldwide Marriage Encounter (a Catholic organization) sharing group tonight where we will talk about Trinitarian love--in this case, especially with our spouse. Here is one paragraph different from the photo.

In the Last Supper discourse in the Gospel of John Jesus tells us how to live Trinitarian love saying, “I give you a new commandment: love one another. Just as I have loved you, so you should also love one another.” Each day is a gift from God providing us with the opportunity—and the choice—to live this Trinitarian love relationship with everyone we encounter—beginning with those closest to us, our spouse and our family. Choose well.

We’ve been in a similar situation before. Operation Linebacker II (the Christmas bombings) brought North Vietnam back to the negotiating table. A month later the Paris peace accords were signed. Three years later North Vietnam conquered the south and the U.S. evacuated its embassy in defeat.

I refer to that mosaic in the basilica in DC as "the scariest Jesus I've ever seen." (Jan de Rosen, the artist that designed that mosaic was the painter of two pieces at the Shrine of St.Anthony in Ellicott City, MD where I am the tour guide. That is how I make the connection to the artist of both.

I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all Americans on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This semiquincentennial marks the defining moment in the history of the United sTates of America, July 4, 1776, that gave enduring voice to the ideals of liberty, equality, the pursuit of happiness, justice, and self-government.

May this milestone renew the shared commitment to the promise of freedom, justice, opportunity and democracy. May Americans honor the courage and vision of those who came before them by strengthening their communities, respecting their differences and working together toward a more perfect union.

Vance is wrong. Words Matter. Former Senator and Marine James Webb described the importance of Words in Washington in his novel Something to Die For--perhaps not coincidentally a novel about an unsuccessful war of choice.
