Recourse
@re-course
Recourse campaigns for a world where people and planet are at the heart of development. We push international finance institutions to make their policies and practices more sustainable, accountable and socially just. Find out more on www.re-course.org
We call on the World Bank Board to: • Meet with civil society to explain the decision and how members voted • Require the IFC to make a plan for providing remedy to complainants • Ensure a transparent and inclusive leader selection process for the new WBG accountability mechanism 👆️ (More in letter)
How will the World Bank’s Board uphold the integrity of its accountability system going forward? Together with 99 organisations and individuals, Recourse has written to the Board to condemn their decision and demand an explanation. Read the letter here: bit.ly/IFC-mf #WorldBank #accountability
The decision also leaves affected communities in Cambodia stranded, without recourse to remedy. bit.ly/IFC1023 The Board has even gone a step further and ruled out all microfinance cases, while the CAO’s Director resigned in protest at the move. www.cao-ombudsman.org/news/ifc-boa...
A CAO investigation found that the IFC violated its own standards when investing in 6 banks providing microfinance in Cambodia, and this noncompliance led to predatory lending practices. By allowing the IFC to dodge responsibility for these harms, the Board has undermined the CAO's independence.
No justice for communities? Microfinance projects backed by the IFC in Cambodia were meant to foster prosperity, not fragility. Predatory lenders left borrowers with unmanageable debt, which led to livelihood loss, hunger, suicides — the subject of a case brought to the CAO by communities.
Accountability in crisis at the World Bank Group? The Bank's Board recently overruled its own independent accountability mechanism (CAO), in an unprecedented move which allowed its private sector arm (IFC) to dodge accountability for the microfinance debt crisis it has contributed to in Cambodia. 🧵
The banks and companies behind the Reko Diq project promote it as “sustainable” and “critical” for energy transition. But without addressing risks, consulting local people, and putting safeguards in place, the project risks doing more harm than good. It's time to #RethinkRekoDiq bit.ly/RekoDiq
Reko Diq is one of the world's largest untapped copper and gold reserves. It is located in Balochistan, a heavily militarised area where local people and Indigenous groups can't speak out. The project is run by Barrick Mining Corporation and backed by several development banks.
The UN has called for human rights to be centred in mineral value chains The IFC, a major mining financier, must overhaul its standards to protect affected people in the race for minerals Natalie Bugalski @inclusivedevt.bsky.social explains the stakes: ifc-exposed.org/ifc-standard... #IFCexposed
#IFCexposed 🔍️ How can the IFC close policy gaps on reprisals in its Sustainability Framework review? The bank has made progress, but gaps remain that leave communities in fear of reprisal if they speak out. Katelyn Gallagher of @bankinfocenter.bsky.social explains: ifc-exposed.org/how-can-the-...
The World Bank Group's private sector arm, IFC, is currently reviewing its globally influential standards. This is a critical moment to call for stronger protections for people and the planet. Learn about IFC's impact and join the campaign: ifc-exposed.org #IFCexposed
Over the years, International Finance Corporation investments have left a troubling trail of harms and human rights abuses in their wake. The bank's safeguards have not always been strong or respected enough to protect communities. Read their stories on #IFCexposed 🔍️ ifc-exposed.org
Opaque financial intermediary lending can keep fossil fuel finance flowing despite the ADB's climate commitments. The latest #BankWatch from NGO Forum on ADB explores why greater transparency and stronger safeguards are needed. 📖 www.forum-adb.org/bankwatch

Intelligent energy systems bring local benefits, boost jobs, and remain relevant for the long-term. @adb.org should be investing in local knowledge and skills training as well as infrastructure, to ensure long-term public benefit and access to affordable energy. #ACEF2026 #JustEnergyTransition
🔦 @adb.org has invested billions in ‘clean’ energy in recent years But much of this was for high-risk projects or false solutions which may prolong fossil fuels in Asia At #ACEF2026, we call for investment in 100% renewable energy systems bit.ly/BoR-25 #BankOnRenewables
"ACEF must not be a platform for normalising collaboration with companies that are actively fuelling the energy & climate crises. The ADB must keep its development mandate at heart when choosing private sector partners." — Marjorie Pamintuan, Recourse #ACEF2026 #StopFuelingTheCrisis @adb.org
A reminder for governments, development banks & energy companies at #ACEF2026: Asia needs investment in accessible, community-led, 100% renewable energy systems — not fossil fuels. Public funds should protect people and ecosystems — not corporate profit. @adb.org #BankOnRenewables
We engaged the IMF, scrutinised climate finance governance, and advocated for reforms to the international financial system to better align financial flows with climate resilient development. #AnnualReport2025
In 2025, Recourse pushed for a fair international financial system, challenging the rules and frameworks that shape how development is financed, who bears risk, and how climate considerations are reflected in economic decision making. 🧵 🌱 → re-course.org/annual-repor...
The AfDB has an opportunity to support a rights-based and community-centred energy transition through equitable renewable energy access, accountable finance and stronger engagement with civil society and affected communities. #AfDBAM2026
