He went on to show them they were wrong about how he used their machines. In 1937 set up the now long gone Scientific Computing Service in 23 Bedford Square (now the Architectural Association). Did detailed bombing and artillery tables for the allies in WW2. Elected FRS in 1950
In other news, my duck has taken to being a mother to her 10 tiny ducklings like the proverbial duck to water.
A magnificent piece of writing for the Times, reviewing Wet Leg at Trinity College Dublin. I've never heard of "Rhian Teasdale, Wet Leg’s purring, foot-stomping frontwoman, ...the most punk-rock aerobics teacher in history" - and I want to find a video of this!
Nasa's "Eyes on the Solar System" is a website where you can see where various probes are relative to us - and get some mind-boggling views and information. You can fly around and see for yourself where your favourite is. Mine is Voyager 2 - travelling at 16km/second or so
The Guardian invites nominations. I have put forward the Spineless Orange Humanity Vampire Trump
If you ever get to Yalta, I recommend visiting his house that he had built and which he was heavily engaged in the design of. A real gem, and the guides are very knowledgeable and friendly
Juice vesicles (citrus kernels) - the remains of my chilled red grapefruit. And very tasty it was too. These have also gone now.
Those of us of a certain age might fondly remember this young lady. Apparantly a new film about her is on its way!
Dr. James Stagg, CB, OBE, FRSE - and US Legion of Merit Persuaded Eisenhower to delay D-Day from June the 5th, and seized an unexpected weather gap that gave him a chance on June 6th. The new film "Pressure" shows something of this extraordinary man. Just watched it - Highly Recommended
For the interested - there is a LOT of moving steel mechanisms beneath those innocuous steps - which will keep grinding and inexorably taking you to Valhalla until some kind spark stops it. But there is not a reverse button to undo your strangulation.
Couldn't help myself - had to post this diagram I've just found.. apologies to the to the creators, but their credits are in in the image Gorgeous!
For those of us of a certain age - a bit of sad news today. Used to drink in the Coach and Horses from time to time back in my student days. Said to be an irascible git - but I don't remember that. I do remember the crappy pies and the revolting slab urinal, and people jostling at the bar.
Those of a certain generation will know what real computer intelligence is.
Archbishop Chichele, Canterbury Cathedral "'I was a pauper born, then to primate here raised, now I am cut down and served up for worms ... Whoever who may be who will pass by, I ask for your remembrance." We processed past him multiple times every day
