a lotta banger lines in this piece on The Game Awards but this one in particular knocked me on my ass with its moral clarity

I’m trying to be measured here, because I’m not above any of this. I think games can be wonderful and are still terribly misunderstood by the unchurched masses for what they can do, and I pin much of that on the garish and off-putting spectacle that Keighley and his show represents. However: I fucking love Ace Combat, and will go to war for the Finnish weirdos at Remedy Entertainment; getting a peek at what they’re doing is cool! I like a movie trailer fine, but it’s not uncommon for a filmmaker you like to make a movie every year or two. Game studios can take years to do their work, which I’ll spend weeks to months playing through. I do that Will Wright shit in my head too, man. I am not immune to propaganda. I just don’t think that the fact that I get some pleasure out of a thing makes that thing good.

But another goal, a more discursive goal perhaps, might be a fiction that is capable of going beyond capturing the raw data of life’s many irresolvable tragedies. A fiction that can unfold in a world that is shaped and held by certain values, indeed, a world that is characterized by them. I don’t need to read another 320 page novel about a twenty-eight-year-old woman living in a major urban center working for a magazine, thinking quietly suicidal thoughts to know that everyday life is filled with things that are kinda boring and kinda bad and kinda make me want to die. I know that already. The thrill of seeing it reflected in fiction is gone for me. What I need is more than data.
